First edition of volume 3 of the Ornithology series, issued as the fifth volume within the 40-volume "Naturalist's library" series edited by William Jardine and originally published from 1833 to 1843. Arrangement and numbering of volumes was altered when the "Naturalist's library" was completed in 1843, and in later reissues of the series. See C. Some of the plates are copied from John Gould and John James Audubon (see "Advertisement" pages 10-11). The bird figures are hand-colored, with landscape backgrounds uncolored. Species names in plate captions are in Latin only. Some plates are numbered with Roman numerals and others with Arabic numerals; one plate is numbered 18*
