THE Author of the following pages, with the utmost deference, submits them to the serious consideration of Christians of every name, and more particularly dedicates them to the Delegates of the first Peace Convention, held in Freemasons' Hall, London, June 22, 1843; also to that Great Assembly that met in Exeter Hall, for the first time, on the 1st of June, 1843, for the special purpose of promoting Christian unity. The work originated in a strong desire he felt to communicate his sentiments to a few select friends on the principles of peace and unity; after he had so done, he was requested to write them down, probably with intent to test the soundness of his views; in attempting to comply with this request, much additional matter pressed upon his mind, which has brought it to its present length. In bringing this Pamphlet before the public I declare myself to be no sectarian, but one who can throw wide the arms of Christian charity and embrace every man who receives the fundamental doctrines of our common Christianity, repentance towards God, and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, not in theory only, but as one who knows by experience what real repentance is, and what a living faith is, by having had the love of God shed abroad in his heart as the evidence thereof, and having been justified by such a faith, has internal evidence that he is at peace with God. And yet I am not the latitudinarian that could embrace every man; I could not embrace the mere moralist who has no love to Christ; nor him, however orthodox his creed, whose life is contrary thereto; I could not embrace the Atheist, the infidel, or scoffer; neither could I receive the socialist, nor him who denies the value of the precious blood of Christ, "Who counts the blood of the covenant, wherewith we are sanctified, an unholy thing, thus doing despite to the spirit of grace;" such men I pity; I choose them not as my companions, but still would live at peace with them; I would not persecute them in any way whatever, but knowing the terrors of the Lord, that his judgments are revealed against all such unrighteousness, I would persuade them to embrace a crucified Redeemer, and thus flee from B |
