To the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor, or Vestry Clerks. Whereas by an act of parliament passed in the second year of the reign of his 128. Notice relate Majesty King George the Third, intituled, " An Act for the keeping regular, quiring churchuniform, and annual registers of all parish poor infants under a certain age, wardens, &c. in within the bills of mortality;" and also by another act, passed in the seventh London, to reyear of his late Majesty, intituled, "An Act for the better regulation of the parish turn lists of poor children of the several parishes therein mentioned, within the bills of morta- poor children, lity," it is enacted, That the respective churchwardens and overseers of the poor of the said parishes, shall keep a register book ruled and headed on each page, agreeable to the schedules annexed to the said acts, of all infants under their care, from their birth or time of admission into the workhouses or parish houses, until apprenticed out or otherwise discharged; and that, at the expiration of each year, the names of all such children as are then remaining under their care, shall be transferred to the register of the next year, under their proper dates and description in which they stand in the preceding register, previous to any further entry; so that the register of each year shall contain a full and distinct account of the whole number of parish poor children under their care in the course of the year, without being intermixed with the deaths or discharges of any of the preceding years. And also, that exact copies of such registers, ending the thirty-first of December in every year, shall be transmitted to the master and wardens of the company of parish clerks, on or before the fifteenth day of February following.

In order that such registers and copies of registers may be correctly made, the master, wardens, and court of assistants have directed, that proper forms be printed agreeable to the schedules of the said acts, and sold only at their hall, in Wood-street, Cheapside, (a) and that attendance be there given for such purpose, and for receipt of the returns on Tuesday afternoons from three to five o'clock, and on Thursday mornings till one o'clock.

And whereas several parishes have neglected to make their returns within the time limited; and others have made returns not agreeable to the act, which has occasioned much delay in making up the general abstract, notice is hereby given, that the master and wardens of the said company are determined to put the penalties in force against such churchwardens and vestry clerks, who do not in future make their returns correctly by the fifteenth of February, as required by the said acts. The penalty for neglecting is five pounds.

IV. Forms relating to overseers' accounts, &c.

House of Commons.

Mercurij, 3o die Novembris, 1830.

Ordered,

That the churchwardens and overseers of the poor, of every parish, township, or other place, in England and Wales, do prepare an account, shewing the total amount of money levied for poor rates and county rates, in the year ending on 25th March, 1830, upon such parish, township, or other place maintaining its own poor; and also, the total amount of money expended in that year; distinguishing, in the said account, the amount of money paid for any other purpose than the relief of the poor; and that such churchwardens and overseers do, as soon as may be, transmit such account to the clerk of the house of commons; stating, in addition to such account, whether any select vestry has been formed, or an assistant overseer appointed, by virtue of the act 59 Geo. III. c. 12; and any other observations which may be thought necessary.

To the Churchwardens or Overseers.

Be pleased to turn over, and write on the two next pages the name of the county and place, and your answer, as required by the above order, and the return this sheet by the post; a direction being printed at the back of it for the: purpose.

The totals of the poor rate accounts annually exhibited to the magistrates, within fourteen days after the appointment of the new parish officers, (under the acts 43 Eliz. c. 2; and 50 Geo. III. c. 49,) will enable the present parish officers to answer the above questions.
