First Collect for Morning Prayer.
(For Evening Prayer omit this Collect, and substitute in its stead the
General Thanksgiving, which will be found at p. 283. of this work.]
O LORD our heavenly Father, Almighty and everlasting God, who hast safely brought us to the beginning of this day; defend us in the same with thy mighty power; and grant that this day we fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of danger; but that all our doings may be ordered by thy go. vernance, to do always that is righteous in thy sight, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed ; give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give ; that both our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee we being defended from the fear of our enemies, may pass our time in rest and quietness, through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.
ALMIGHTY God, the fountain of all wisdom, who knowest our necessities before we ask, and our ignorance in asking ; we beseech thee to have compassion upon our infirmities; and those things which for our unworthiness we dare not, and for our blindness we cannot ask, vouchsafe to give us for the worthiness of thy Son, Jesus Christ our Lord : In whose prevailing name, and form of prayer, we cum up all our petitions unto Thee, beseeching thee to hear us according to the sacred meaning of his own most holy words :

Question. What is your [christian] name?
A. My Godfathers and Godmothers in my Baptism ; wherein I was made a member of Christ, the child of God, and an inheritor of the Kingdom of Heaven. *
Q. What did your Godfathers and Godmothers then for you?
A. They did promise and vow three things in my name : First, that I should renounce the devil and all his works, the pomps and vanity of this wicked world, and all the sinful lusts of the flesh. Secondly, that I should believe all the Articles of the Christian Fạith. And thirdly, that I should keep God's holy will and commandments, and walk in the same all the days of my life.
* That is, capable of inheriting the kingdom of heaven, which by nature we are not, being born in sin ; but this original or birth sin is washed away by our baptism into Christ's religion.
did promise for you, that you should keep God's commandments. Tell me how many there be ?
A. The same which God spake in the twentieth chapter of Exodus *, saying, I am the Lord thy God,

“ In the third month, when the children of Israel were gone forth out of the land of Egypt, the same day came they into the wilderness of Sinai. For they were departed from Rephidim, and were come to the desert of Sinai, and had pitched in the wilderness; and there Israel camped before the mount. And Moses went up unto God, and the LORD called unto him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel ; Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles' wings, and brought you unto myself. Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine. And thou shalt set bounds unto the people round about, saying, Take heed to yourselves that ye go not up into the mount or touch the border of it: whosoever toucheth the mount shall be surely put to death. There shall not an hand touch it, but he shall surely be stoned or shot through ; whether it be beast or man, it shall not live : when the trumpet soundeth long, they skall come up to the mount. And Moses went down from the mount unto the people, and sanctified the people. And he said unto the people, Be ready against the third day. And it came to pass on the third day
