PREFACE.

GRAMMATICAL PROFICIENCY does not merely consist in the number of rules and exceptions learnt by heart, but rather in the ability to apply them in composition. The student's grammatical knowledge, therefore, should be tested both as to the proper wording of the rules and to their due application in turning English into French and correcting faulty sentences. Such is the method followed throughout this Self-Examiner.' In fact, the learner will be enabled to review in a few days his previous studies of the French language so as to learn again anything forgotten or not thoroughly understood; and, after a careful perusal of this little book, intending competitors will have a ready answer to any possible question on French grammar.

OPINIONS OF THE PRESS.

A Synoptic French Grammar. By PAUL GUESDON, a Graduate of the

University of Paris, M.A. (Longmans.)—The author, in his capacity of Professor of French at the Royal Academy, Gosport, feeling the want of a work which would furnish his pupils with ready information on such points as are required in the examinations for the Army, the Navy, the Civil Service, and the English Universities, and not finding one that answered his requirements, has compiled this volume. The plan upon which it is constructed is simple and concise, and the illustrative examples of the peculiarities of the language appropriate; especial attention being given to the orthography and idioms, which are the greatest stumbling-blocks to English scholars.' LITERARY ADVERTISER.

A French Examination Hand Book. By PAUL GUESDON. (Longmans).— 'This, the companion volume to the above, contains a selection of examination papers given to candidates in the Army, Navy, Civil Service, and English Universities; selected pieces for translation from the one tongue to the other; a classified vocabulary of French words; and chapters on the idioms and proverbs, and the general grammatical construction of the French language.' LITERARY ADVERTISER.

The titles of these works give a good idea of their contents. They are calculated to be of great service to intending competitors. The author shows great skill in arranging his materials, and in giving what is necessary, and no more than is necessary." THE MUSEUM.

'Undoubtedly the greatest favour which can be conferred upon a student preparing for examination is to give him, in a single Hand-Book, all the materials required for a thorough preparation, thereby saving him both the expense and the trouble of purchasing and perusing many text-books. Such is the object of the present work, which consists of Two Parts. Part I. is a selection of various examination-papers fully described in the title; Part II. comprises a variety of pieces from French prose-writers and poets, and English prose-writers, together with a complete grammar, tables for the conjugation of all the French verbs, and a French vocabulary. The book is full of really useful information, very clearly arranged, and will doubtless prove a valuable aid to the student preparing for a French examination.' EDUCATIONAL TIMES.
