ITEM NO. 42

Request: At page 2927 of the printed transcript (part 5) a request was made for a statement showing all expenditures by the Northern Pacific Railroad Co. from the beginning until the completion of the road to Puget Sound for purposes other than main line construction and operating expenses.

Answer: There is submitted as Exhibit A a detailed statement prepared by the assistant general auditor of the Northern Pacific Railway Co. from the records of the Northern Pacific Railroad Co. containing this information. It will be noted, however, that this statement does not include disbursements by the land department of the railroad company and reference to Exhibit A of item No. 37 shows payment by the land department of expenses and taxes for the full period to December 31, 1924, by both the railroad company and the railway company. This statement is in such full detail as to character of expenditures that it has not been deemed essential to show these items by years.

It is understood that the request for data as to expenditures is for the purpose of checking the amount expended for branch lines and obviously the expenditures by the land department shown under item No. 37 have no bearing on this question.

(The above is submitted by James B. Kerr, counsel for Northern Pacific Railway Co.)
