So God loved the world, that he gave his onlybegotten Son, to the end that all that believe in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. -St. John iii. 16.

This is a true saying, and worthy of all men to be received, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.-1 Tim. 1, 15.

If any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and he is the propitiation for our sins.-1 St. John ii. 1.

PRAYERS.

Confession from the Commination Service.

Turn thou us, O good Lord, and so shall we be turned. Be favourable, O Lord, be favourable to

thy people, Who turn to thee in weeping, and praying. For thou art a merciful God, Full of compassion, Long-suffering, and of great pity. Thou sparest when we deserve punishment, And in thy wrath thinkest upon mercy. Spare thy people, good Lord, spare them, And let not thy heritage be brought to confusion. Hear us, O Lord, for thy mercy is great, And after the multitude of thy mercies look upon us; Through the merits and mediation of thy blessed Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Visitation of the Sick.

Hear us, Almighty and most merciful God and Saviour; extend thy accustomed goodness to this thy servant who is grieved with sickness. Sanctify we beseech thee, this thy fatherly correction to him; that the sense of his weakness may add strength to his faith, and seriousness to his repentance: That, if it shall be thy good pleasure to restore him to his former health, he may lead the residue of his life in thy fear; or else, give him grace so to take thy visitation, that after this painful life ended, he may dwell with thee in life everlasting; through Jesus Christ our Amen.

Sentences from the Burial Service.

Lord.

Man that is born of a woman hath but a short time to live, and is full of misery. He cometh up, and is cut down like a flower; he fleeth as it were a shadow, and never continueth in one stay.

In the midst of life we are in death: of whom may we seek for succour, but of thee, O Lord, who for our sins art justly displeased?

Yet, O Lord God most holy, O Lord most mighty, O holy and most merciful Saviour,

deliver us not into the bitter pains of eternal death.

Thou knowest, Lord, the secrets of our hearts; shut not thy merciful ears to our prayer; but spare us, Lord, most holy, O God, most mighty, O holy and merciful Saviour, thou most worthy Judge eternal, suffer us not, at our last hour, for any pains of death, to fall from thee.

2 Cor. xiii.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

No. III.

RELIGIOUS DESPONDENCY.

PSALMS.

xxii. 1-11.

1. My God, my God, look upon me; why hast thou forsaken me: and art so far from my health, and from the words of my complaint?

2. O my God, I cry in the day-time, but thou hearest not and in the night-season also I take no rest.

3. And thou continuest holy: 0 thou worship of Israel.

4. Our fathers hoped in thee: they trusted in thee, and thou didst deliver them.

5. They called upon thee, and were holpen: they put their trust in thee, and were not confounded.

6. But as for me, I am a worm and no man: a very scorn of men, and the out-cast of the people.

7. All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out their lips, and shake their heads, saying,

8. He trusted in God, that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, if he will have him.

9. But thou art he that took me out of my mother's womb thou wast my hope when I hanged yet upon my mother's breasts.

10. I have been left unto thee ever since I was born: thou art my God even from my mother's womb.

11. O go not from me, for trouble is hard at hand and there is none to help me.

LESSONS.

Gospel for St. Matthias's Day.

St. Matt. xi. 25.

At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes. Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in thy sight. All things are delivered unto me of my Father and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him. Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Epistle for St. Philip and St. James.

St. James i. 1.
