We have seen there wil be a day of Fudsment, and that the Fudge will judge the world in righteousneffe. We have seen there will be a twofold sentence pronounced by him : Of absolution upon the Godly, Mit.25.34. Come ye blesed of my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you : Of condemnation upon the wicked, v.41. Depart from me ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the Devil and his Angels. We Mail cheretore here speak of the state of the wicked, after the righteous Fudge hath pronounced the sentence of condemnation upon them : and shall shew bow í heir bodies and souls being re-united, shall be lo continued in that life for ever, to undergo the punishment due unto their sins. Here three thing are to be taken into consideration,

1. The duration and continuance of their per fons, without ever dying or being destroyed or 4xnihilated.

2. The duration of their pains, without ez erb!. irgtaken off.

3. The dreadfulnesse of those infernal pains ars to: mets.

1. The Scripture speaks expresly that the wick ed after the day of judgment shall not be confund or anxióılated, but remain alive in Joul and boil.

The same Scripture which faies the wicked shall be destroy'd, and perish and die, faies also chat they shall be tormented with never-dying paines , Mat.25.41. Depart from me ye cursed (Thill the Judge say to the wicked ac the last day) into Everlasting fire. And least any Nould imagine chat the fire shall be everlasting, but not the torments; at the 46 v. ic to lowes, and these hall go away into everlasting punishment. Now if he fire be everlasting by which God punishech :he damned; and the punifoment inflicted be also 'verlasting, then must che damned everlastingly ubfift to endure that punishment: Ocherwise here will be a punishment inflicted, and none enZured; which is a contradiction. Indeed the etervity of that fire prepared for the Devil and bis An. gels is a sufficienc demonstration of the eternity of such as suffer in it. And as that fire is cermed eternal, lo that cternity is described as abfolate ; excluding all limits and determination. The end

on the burning of fire is by extinguishing, and

that fire wbich cannot be extinguished,

can rever end : But such is the fire which shall cormenc the damned. For he whose fas is in his hand, fill burn up the chaff with urquencheable fire, Mark 3:12. Luke 3.17. And he bach cold

ed for ever and ever (all which the Scriptures exprefly teach) then shall the persons of the damned never be destroy'd or annihilated; but Thall subfist for ever, and be coeternal to the cormenting fames. When therefore the Scripture fpeaks, that the wicked( after che resurrection ) shall be punished with death, and that a second death, it cannot be founderstood, that they shall be no more, nor (in any sense ) be said to live or subfift: For the enduring of this fire is that very death, and they are therefore said to die the fe

13 cond death, because they endure eternal torments. He that overcometh Shall not be hurt by the second death, Rev.2.11. It seemes they which shall die that death, shall be hurt by it; whereas if it were annihilation, and so a conclusion of their torments, it would be no way hurtful, or injurious, buc highly beneficial co them. Buc the living torments are the second death, For Rev, 21.8. It was revealed to St. Fohn, that the fearful and unbelieving , and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and forcerers, and idolaters, and all liars Mall have their part in the lake that burreth with fire and brimstone , which is the le* cond death. Now if to have a part in the lake be the second death, if that part be a perpetual coxtinuance and permanfion in torment ; (as is before proved ) then to say that the wicked shall die the second death, is not a comfutation of their eternal being in misery, but an affertion of it;

When Chriftbali come to take vengeance on them that know net God, and obey not the Gospel of our Lord Fesus Chrif, 'cis faid, they shall be punished with everlasting de ftruction, from the presence of the Lord, and from the Glory of his power. Wherefore from obat hath been said, we may conclude . chac che domned shall continue both in foul and body under it: wrath of God, and the torments proceeding free it, never to be quitted of them by annihilation, Here they mighe have life, but would no: there they would have death, but cinnor.
