The Biographical Notes and Outlines at the end are intended to be expanded into Essays, and, though not directly bearing on the Lessons, give an increased interest to their study, and ought to be read in connection with them. The Exercises on the Formation of Words are intended to aid in composition as well as to supply useful Home Work. They might be largely extended from the Lessons.

III. ARITHMETIC.

This subject has been undertaken by Mr ALEXANDER TROTTER, Teacher of Mathematics, etc., Edinburgh; Author of "Arithmetic for Advanced Classes," etc. He has prepared a practical class-book, extending to Decimal Fractions inclusive, and ending with Tables and Exercises on the Metric System. There are also Questions for Examination. The work is published in Parts, sold separately.
