DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR,

UNITED STATES LAND OFFICE,
Missoula, Mont., July 5, 1899.

The following exhibit is submitted as additional and supplemental to the detailed lists of lands examined and classified by the board of commissioners, shown on Exhibit A, of even date herewith:

The lands classified in this report, with the exception of township 21 north, range 27 west, which lies in a small valley directly tributary to the Clarks Fork of the Columbia River, lie in the basin of Thompson River and its tributaries. The divide between these two portions is low and the whole territory may be said to lie in a valley from 6 to 10 miles in width, extending from the Cabinet Mountains on the west to the mountains forming the western boundary of the Flathead Indian Reservation on the east. This basin is somewhat rough and mountainous but as compared with the mountains just mentioned it is quite low. The valley is well timbered and there are many natural meadows, some of which have been located upon by settlers.

We found no mineral indications in townships 22, 23, and 24 north of range 27 west. In township 24 north, range 26 west, the west half is of the same general character as the townships just described. The east half of this township and all of fractional township 24 north, range 25 west, lie on the western slope of the mountains forming the western boundary of the Flathead Indian Reservation. These lands are high and rocky and have the same indications of mineral, in the way of float, as was found in the other townships lying on the west slope of these mountains.

In township 21 north, range 27 west, we have a high spur of the Cabinet Mountains and here are found the first indications of mineral which as you travel westward become more numerous and of greater value. This portion of the township we have classified as mineral. The balance lying in the valley and the south half of section 31 as, also, the valley of Weeksville Creek in the eastern part of the township we have classified as nonmineral, as they contain no mineral indications.

CERTIFICATE TO EXHIBITS A AND B

EXHIBIT B

DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR,

UNITED STATES LAND OFFICE, Bozeman, Mont., January 2, 1897.

The following exhibit is submitted as additional and supplemental to the detailed lists of lands examined and classified by the board of commissioners, shown on Exhibit A, of even date herewith:

The lands embraced in this classification comprise the Bridger Range with its timbered slopes and foothills and the adjacent low but rough country east and west thereof.

The Bridge Range proper covers an area of 80 square miles, trending in a northerly direction about 22 miles, with an average width of 31⁄2 miles, and lying in townships 1 south, 1 north, 2 north, 3 north, in range 6 east, and township 3 north, range 5 east.

The average altitude of this range (crest) is 8.600 feet. There are three peaks, Bridger, Ross, and Hardscrabble, whose elevations are, respectively, 9,106, 8,950, 9,000.

The range belongs to the Rocky Mountain system, is of an isoclinal folding structure, with its steep portion on the west side. As the stratas are all conformable with the Cambrian quartzite lying on the gneissic mass to the Laramie coal-bearing sandstone and shale, it is evident that the folding did not take place till the end of the Cretaceous times. Through township 2 north, range 6 east, a complete succession of geological formations of the Paleozoic and Mesozoic ages are well exposed by erosion.

[ocr errors]

Extensive degradation has stripped the range of all the Mesozoic rocks down to the foothills on the east side, where the thin beds of "red sandstone (probably Jura-Trias) and Laramie coal-bearing sandstone and shale outcrop. These stratas dip eastward. On the west side even the Paleozoic beds have been removed by denudation down to the Archaen rocks, exposing the gneisses and schists, which, with their débris deposited along the base in the north half, now form nearly one-half of surface of the range, and with the Cambrian quartzites, shales, and limestones and Devonian lime and shale make up practically all the west slope of the mountain. The Carboniferous limestone which forms the crest of the range is of such a massive extent that it reaches down the east slope to the foothills, except where faulting has tilted up later stratas in the north part.

The lands classified as mineral belong nearly all to the above formationsArchean and Paleozoic. During the upheaval which caused this range to rise the Archaen ground mass was fissured considerably, the sedimentary stratas lying thereon became faulted, and in numerous places disturbed with intrusive
