V. You will take such testimony relative to, and make such personal inspection of the lands involved as will satisfy your judgment as to the proper classification thereof.

EXHIBIT B

DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR,

UNITED STATES LAND OFFICE.
Missoula, Mont., Dec. 4th, 1900.

The following exhibit is submitted as additional and supplemental to the detailed lists of lands examined and classified by the board of commissioners, shown on Exhibit A, of even date herewith.

CHARACTER AND DESCRIPTION OF COUNTRY

The lands herein classified lie on the eastern slope of the Bitter Root Mountains, well down towards the Bitter Root River. The Lo Lo, an important tributary of the Bitter Root, passes nearly through the lands examined. From the Lo Lo, to the south, the country rises abruptly from the stream, in many places being very precipitous. Here was found the Western Montana Placer Mining Company's quartz claims. This is an incorporated company, with its principal place of business at Missoula. The property consists of ten claims. There has been about $25,000 expended in development work upon the property so far. Shafts aggregating 225 feet have been sunk, and 805 feet of tunnel has been run. The ore body or vein is from four to ten feet wide and fairly well mineralized. The ore is free gold and mills about $8.00 to the ton. The formation is schist and granite changing to quartzite and granite, with some quartz float, to the south, the formation being much broken up towards the southern portion of what will be township 11 north, of range 21 west, when surveyed.

To the north of the Lo Lo the country rises much less abruptly, although it is yet mountainous. On the S. E. 4 of section 35, township 12 N., R. 21 W., is located the old Chickeman mine, at one time a promising property, but now abandoned. The formation here is lime and slate.

On the N. W. 4 of the N. E. 4 of section 29, township 12 N., R. 21 W., is the Peacock lode, owned by Mrs. L. Loring and Tho's Marshall. It is at present under bond to W. H. Anderson, who is at work upon the property. Nearly $4,000 has been expended upon it, and the prospect has been regularly represented for the past ten years. The ore is free gold and assays run from $3.00 to $40.00 to the ton. There is a 40-foot shaft and about 400 feet of tunnel. Across Woodman Gulch from the property just named, lying on the N. E. of the N. W. 4 of section 29, T. 12 N., R. 21 W., is the Lawyers Combination, owned by Mess. Bass & Anderson. This is a copper-gold proposition. The

assessment work has been regularly done upon it for several years. During the past eight years over $3,000 has been expended in development work, 200 feet of tunnel and 100 feet of shaft have been excavated. The formation is lime and slate. The formation of the north half of township 12 N., R. 21 W., is of the same general character, and shows many indications of mineral, and it is reasonable to suppose good prospects may yet be found there. The south half of this township, as well as the north half of township 11 N., R. 21 W., and the unsurveyed portion of township 12 N., R. 20 W., lie much lower in the valley of the Lo Lo, and with the exceptions noted, show little or no evidence of mineral character. The formation noted above on section 29, T. 12 N., R. 21 W., continues in a northwest direction, and the continuation of the copper-gold ledge is found in section 19 of the same township, and for this reason, and because it has been prospected and good indications of mineral found, the southeastern portion of section 19 is also classified as mineral.

I hereby certify the foregoing report, Exhibits A and B, is a true and correct duplicate report of the lands examined and classified by Geo. W. Garrett, one of the members of the Board of Mineral Land Commissioners for Montana, for the land district of Missoula, from the 1st day of November, A. D. 1900, to the 30th day of November, A. D. 1900, both dates included, according to a report submitted to me by the said commissioner in compliance with the instructions of the Hon. Commissioner of the General Land Office under the act of Congress of June 6th, 1900.

G. O. FREEMAN,

Clerk to the Board of Mineral Land Commissioners for Montana.
