Three.

The Apostles', Nicene, and Athanasian. 105. Who put the Articles of the Faith into Creeds?

The apostles and bishops of the Church. 106. For what purpose?

To show against heretics what the faith was. 107. What is a heretic?

A person who knowingly and wilfully denies the faith of the universal Church. 108. How was the true faith known from false?

That which was old, which was handed down, which all Churches had held from the Apostles' times, is true-what was new, and lately invented, false.

109. Quote a text to prove that what the Apostles delivered is to be held.

110. Who is the alone authorized witness, and teacher of this faith?

The Church." Hear the Church.” Matt. xviii. 17. 19.

"The Church, the

pillar of truth." 1 Tim. iii. 15.

111. May not people discover the original faith for themselves, from the Bible, without the aid of the Church?

It is not likely.

112. Why?

Because God thought the aid of the Church necessary.

113. Any other reason?

The Bible was never intended for the purpose without the Church.

114. Any other reason?

Those who try generally fail: witness the many differences and heresies.

115. What did you promise to do thirdly by your godfathers and godmothers?

That I would keep God's holy will and commandments.

116. Where are these in a small compass?

Exodus xx.

117. As your God-parents promised these things in your Baptism, do you yourself, in your heart, feel that you are bound by them?

Yes, verily.

118. What is the meaning of that word, verily ?

In truth, really.

119. What is it you "really" think?

That I am bound to believe and to do all that my God-parents promised for me. 120. And what are those things?

To renounce the Devil; believe the Christian faith; keep God's commandments. 121. But can you do all this? With God's help I can.

122. Not without it?

No: our sufficiency is of God.

123. Does holy Scripture give you reason to think that God will give you this help?

"Much more will your heavenly Father give his Holy Spirit to them that ask him." Luke xi. 13.

124. Now you ought on account of your Baptism to render unto God continually two things: what are these?

Firstly, thanks; secondly, prayer.

125. For what do you give thanks? That He hath brought me into this state of salvation.

126. What does that mean?

A state in which I am delivered from sin, and accepted of God to salvation. 127. When were you brought into the state?

When I was baptized.

128. Show that Baptism brings you into a state of salvation.

Baptism now saves us." 1 Pet. iii. 21. 129. Besides, Baptism admits you into what society?

Into the Church.

130. And Christ brings people into the Church for what purpose?

To save them.

"There were added to the Church daily such as should be saved.” Acts ii. 47.

131. Besides, what is the Church, to which you were added, said to be by St. Paul?

The Body of Christ.

132. Of which Body Christ is said to be what?

He is said to be "the Saviour of the body." Ephes. v. 23.

133. And now, what are you to pray God for?

His grace-that is, his divine light, and strength and power.

134. For what purpose ?

That I may continue in the same.

135. Same what?

State of salvation.

136. Or what?

State of acceptance with God.

137. Into which you were brought when?

When I was baptized.

138. And which you will continue in only, by doing what, through God's grace? 1. Renouncing the Devil: 2. believing the articles of the faith: 3. keeping God's holy will and commandments.

THE CREED.

1. What was the second thing promised for you by your godfathers and godmothers? That I should believe the Articles of the Christian faith.

2. Say those Articles.

I believe in God, &c.

3. What does the Creed principally contain?

It contains what I am to believe concerning God and the Church.

4. When you say, "I believe," do you mean, I believe only one Article, or all the Creed contains?

All the Creed contains.

5. What is belief or faith, according to the Apostle?

"Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." Heb. xi. 1.
