In these Chapters, which are founded on Lectures given
at Newnham College, I have tried to give a connected view of the so-called Elizabethan period.
I hope that they may be a stimulus to the study of the works of the writers of this time, and also that they
may serve as connecting links between the many excellent
works both of criticism and research which bear on the
period, and to which I have been so largely indebted.
