power Prompted awhile to leave thy heavenly throue, To rescue man, whom hellish foes devour, And make a ransom'd world once more thine own; Those hellish foes by thy strong arm o'erthrown, The victor's power and majesty proclaim Through hell's dread gulph, and death's dark shade are known, Thine acts of might, the triumphs of thy fame, And earth redeem'd resounds with songs to Jesu's name. Seraphic choirs, who at the birth of time, Swell'd the glad shout of harmony and praise, Who on this wond'rous act of grace sublime, To Bethlehem's shepherds hymn'd your softer lays; Again, again, your blest hosannahs raise, Glory to God, and peace, and mercy sing; From every orb through all the wilds of space, Let every tongue its tuneful tribute bring, Till with Jehovah's praise, his vast creation ring. HOPE IN GOD! A. B. By Mrs. ROBErt Miller. Why art thou cast down, O my soul, and why art thou disquieted within me?" Psalm xlii. WHY heaves my breast with this desponding sigh? Why, O my sinking spirit, thus distrest? Art thou not form'd to seek thy native sky, And not in this frail tenement to rest? Why art thou thus cast down? Resign thy load, Throw off thy needless fears, and Hope in God. His out-stretch'd arm, from earliest ages bared, To save them, was his people's sure defence; His willing ear their supplications heard, In all their cares they drew their succour thence; His tender love from everlasting flow'd, And fix'd the surest base of Hope in God. The ancient Patriarchs, by this inspir'd, Disdain'd to feel earth's transitory pain; To prove their faith, this test their Lord requir'd, And earthly loss they found eternal gain; Eeft the vain good this varying world bestow'd, And found their changeless help was Hope in God. This arm'd the suffering saints of former days, With dauntless breast to brave the tyrant's wrath; From ling'ring tortures drew the note of praise, And wing'd with heavenly joy their latest breath; While angels round the exalted martyrs stood, In death's last moments whispering, Hope in God. This rais'd the royal mourner's drooping breast, O'er sorrow's gloom diffus'd a cheering ray; When complicated woes his heart opprest, He sought his burthen'd spirit thus to stay, "Why sinks my soul beneath the afflictive rod, Disquieted within me? Hope in God." smart, And gently heal'd conviction's galling wound, Whilst ling'ring in the half-regenerate heart, The rankling wounds of in-bred sin are found, Let not thy soul o'er this in sorrows brood, But join with ceaseles prayer firm Hope in God. Should fierce temptation press thy conscious, breast, With flaming darts thy firmest faith assail; Unshaken stand secure the fiery test, And dare, in Jesu's name, the rage of hell; The balm to heal is a Redeemer's blood, The powerful shield to conquer, Hope in God. But if the wily tempter's hellish force, The fearful feeble-minded soul dismay, While yielding to its dire impetuous course, O'erwhelm'd he sinks amid the doubtful day, Yet breathe one sigh, pour one repentant flood, And peace again shall dawn, with Hope in God. When all-prevailing pain this frame invades, While at its touch, whate'er its power per- With agonizing consciousness awakes; If disappointment in the smiling morn, Deceitful dash the cup of joy away; Distrust the treach'rous smile of worldly When the deceitful dream of time is o'er, And feeble age stand tottering on the verge emerge, And put thy soul's unshaken Hope in God, Celestial light shall gild the dreary road, 8,85 Sermon on James iii. 5 570 647 172 252, 331 On Benevolence and Duty to Strangers 730 808, 891 Sermon on the Nativity of Christ III.
