A deficiency, however, amounting to $44, is apparent under the item "Engineering Experiment Station, Annapolis, Md." Of this $26.88 is due to an adjustment of salaries of employees by the Auditor for the Navy Department, of which neither the bureau nor the experiment station was advised. The remainder, $17.12, is due to an oversight in the bookkeeping department at the experiment station.

The general overhaul of the machinery of the Missouri, Maine, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, Maryland, West Virginia, Cincinnati, Raleigh, and San Francisco was practically completed during the fiscal year. The overhaul of the Kearsarge, Kentucky, Illinois, Alabama, and Wisconsin has proceeded as rapidly as funds and labor available would permit, and at the date of this report work on the machinery is far advanced; water-tube boilers have been installed in the first three mentioned. Some progress has been made on the general overhaul
