The remainder, $17.12, is due to an oversight in the bookkeeping department at the experiment station. OPERATIONS OF THE BUREAU. In addition to the usual repairs and renewals to the machinery of the fleet, work of considerable extent and involving large expenditure has been done to the machinery of a number of vessels. The general overhaul of the machinery of the Missouri, Maine, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, Maryland, West Virginia, Cincinnati, Raleigh, and San Francisco was practically completed during the fiscal year. The overhaul of the Kearsarge, Kentucky, Illinois, Alabama, and Wisconsin has proceeded as rapidly as funds and labor available would permit, and at the date of this report work on the machinery is far advanced; water-tube boilers have been installed in the first three mentioned. Some progress has been made on the general overhaul |
