218. Karis used as a particle of affirmation, and must be translated certainly, furely. Gen. xliv. 29. And if ye take this also from me, and mischief befal him, (×zı xaraƐETE) certainly ye shall bring down my gray hairs, &e.- Rom. xvi. 2.-Kai yag, For indeed fhe hath been a helper of many.-1 Cor. viii. 5. 219. Kas often fupplies the place of the relative pronoun is, who, which. Ifaiah v. 4. What shall I do to my vineyard, (xai xx ɛñoinσa) which I have not done ?-Dan. vii. 4. I beheld till the wings thereof were plucked, (nar) with which it was lifted up from the earth, &c. This tranflation is in the margin of our bibles; and Grotius in loc. fays, "Verte, per quas efferebatur fupra terram. Sæpe "enim Chaldæis ut et Hebræis copula vim habet relativi.”— Mark xvi. 18. They shall put hands on the fick, (xas) who sball recover.-Luke xv. 15. And joined himself to a citizen of that country, (xai) who fent him into his field.-John vii. 45.

As Jefus fat at meat in the boufe, (nai ide) behold, many publicans and finners came*. -Matt. xxviii. 9. And as they went to tell his disciples, (nai 1d8) lo, Jefus met them.-A&s x. 17. Now, while Peter doubted in his own mind what that vifion which he had seen might mean, (xaɩ d) behold the men who were fent*, &c. 223. Kai is fometimes omitted, Jupplied.
