L'expression de cette figure pourrait bien faire regarder ce tableau comme une Vierge avec l'enfant Jésus, mais on sait que c'est le portrait de Marie Ruthven, fille de lord comte de Gowry, qui donna sa fille en mariage au peintre Antoine Van Dyck. Elle tient son fils sur ses genoux en lui donnant à téter. Il serait difficile de trouver rien de plus gracieux que ce tableau, dans lequel Van Dyck a mis tout son talent comme compositeur, comme coloriste et comme dessinateur. Le tableau original fait partie du cabinet de sir Robert Lyttelton, chevalier de l'ordre du Bain et gouverneur de Guernesey. François Bartolozzi a fait, en 1770, une jolie gravure au burin d'après ce tableau qui est ovale. Haut., 4 pieds 2 pouces ; larg., 2 pieds 10 pouces. FLEMISH SCHOOL. ooooo VAN DYCK. The expression of this figure might cause the present picture to be considered as a Virgin with the Infant Jesus, but it is known to be the portrait of Mary Ruthven, daughter to the Earl of Gowry, and who married the painter Anthony Van Dyck. She has her child on her knees and is offering it the breast. It would be difficult to find any thing more graceful than this picture in the composition, the colouring, and drawing of which, Van Dyck has put out all his talent. The original picture forms part of the Collection of Sir Robert Lyttleton, Knight of the Bath, and Governor of Guernsey. Francis Bartolozzi, in 1770, did a pretty plate in the Line Manner after this picture which is oval, Height 4 feet 5 inches; width 3 feet. |
