The road was only operated from Keokuk to Des Moines, the capital of Iowa (162 miles), during the first nine months of the year 1869. It was opened for business to Grand Junction, a distance of 50 miles further, in October last year, and the balance of the road to Fort Dodge, 35 miles further, is to be finished and in full running order about June, 1870.

This road connects at Keokuk with the Toledo, Wabash and Western, the Toledo, Peoria and Warsaw, and the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroads, and extending in a north-west direction to Fort Dodge, to a connection with the Dubuque and Sioux City RR., crosses the Burlington and Missouri River RR. at Ottum

ma, the Chicago,' Rock' Island and Pacific at Des Moines, and the Chicago and North-Western at Grand Junction.

An iron railroad bridge is being built at Keokuk across the Mississippi River, and will be completed in the year 1870.

Rolling Stock (January, 1870).—Locomotive engines, 25. Cars-passenger, 16 baggage, mail and express, 10; freight, 515-total, 541.

Operations for the year ending December 31, 1869.-Gross earnings, $830,241. Operating expenses, including taxes, $464,849. Nett earnings, $365,392.

General Balances (January 1, 1870).-Capital stock-authorized, $8,000,000; paid in, $3,872,500. Funded debt-authorized, $7,000,000, of which $2,310,000 are 1st mortgage 8 per cent. bonds on road from Keokuk to Des Moines, due October, 1877, and $1,690,000 are 8 per cent. 1st mortgage on 85 miles of new road and 466,000 acres of land in Iowa, and are also a 2d mortgage on the road from Keokuk to Des Moines, 162 miles. These bonds are due in October, 1898. Part of them will only be issued when the road is completed the full 247 miles.

This road was undertaken to bring Schenectady and its northern connection into

Under the lease the Grand Trunk Company are to maintain and operate the line; to pay on share capital 6 (since reduced to 4) per cent., and to assume all the obligations of the lessor.

To meet the City of Portland bonds there is on hand a sinking fund amounting to $567,297 53. These bonds have in part become due and the remainder is nearly due. The balance, after the distribution of the sinking fund, will be refunded under the act of the State of Maine, dated March 3, 1868. The interest is payable in Portland, Boston and New York, and at different dates semi-annually.
