CINCINNATI SOUTHERN RAILWAY.

Road.-Cincinnati, O., to Chattanooga, Tenn...... 340 miles. Preliminary surveys are now being made, and the construction of the road is to be commenced as soon as the requisite grant to cross Kentucky shall have been obtained. The City of Cincinnati has proposed to aid this Company by a loan of its credit to the amount of $10,000,000, but as yet without success, owing to the interposition of legal obstacles.

The whole line is under contract to completed by May 1, 1871. At Pollard this road will connect with the Pensacola and Louisville Railroad, now completed to Pollard, and with it will form a direct line from Selma to Pensacola, Fla. It will thus form the most direct practicable route from the coal fields and valuable deposits of iron of Central Alabama to the Harbor of Pensacola, which is the best in the Gulf in the territory of the United States, and the only one accessible and convenient for large vessels. The State of Alabama guarantees the first mortgage bonds of the Company to the extent of $16,000 per mile, as far as it is opened, as a first-class road in every respect. At Pollard it will also connect with the Mobile and Montgomery RR., now in operation.

First mortgage bonds to the extent of $3,000,000 have been authorized for issue, and will be used in finishing and equipping the line.

The W. C. & RR. R. is completed and in running order 148 miles. It is graded and substantially ready for the superstructure 50 miles additional. It has cost in gold $3,600,000, and would cost to-day in currency, $6,000,000. This $3,600,000 used in construction was obtained as follows:

The State, by act ratified Dec. 20, 1866, waived the priority of its lien and permitted the Company to place upon their entire road built, and to be built, a 1st mortgage of $4,000,000, the State reserving to itself the right of a second mortgage only. This first mortgage was delivered to Le Grand Lockwood and others, of New York City, and bonds secured thereby issued in accordance with its provisions. None of these, however, have been sold, but $1,200,000 have been hypothecated as security for $300,000 floating debt.
