In all these years there are large amounts which are properly extraordinary expenses. The train mileage in 1866 was 1,289,806; in 1867, 1,167,204; in 1868, 1,070,496 miles. The cotton transportation in 1866 amounted to 97,581; in 1867 to $141,666; in 1868 to 110,662 bales, chiefly to Mobile. The earnings in 1866 and 1867 were $2 35; in 1868, $2 03 per train mile.

By agreement of February 4, 1867, the bondholders agreed to fund all arrearage of interest to and including November, 1867, in interest bonds, and all coupons on interest and sterling bonds due in 1868 and 1869 in sterling bonds; the payment of interest on all bonds to be resumed on May 1, 1870. The floating debt, amounting January 1, 1869, to $925,646 48, to be paid from the earnings during this interval.

* The Troy and Boston Railroad Company operated the Western Vermont Railroad 54 miles in length until January 1, 1867, when the lease expired. This, with the other leased roads, made the total operated 109 miles. Since that time the length operated has been only as above, 55 miles. The lease rents of these roads is not included in operating expenses, but made a charge on nett earnings.

This road belongs to the State of Massachusetts, having been purchased from the original proprietors with bonds of that State, issued to the Troy and Greenfield Company, to the amount of $200,000. It forms the connecting link between the line in Massachusetts and the Troy and Boston Railroad.
