The leased lines in Iowa have been increased during the year by 1034 miles. The 49 miles of the Iowa Falls and Sioux City RR. were brought into use in August. The Cedar Falls and Minnesota RR. was opened by sections during the year.

The bridge across the Mississippi River between Dunleith and Dubuque was opened January 1, 1869. During the year 1869, 85.35 miles have been relaid with new iron, and 75.43 miles with repaired iron.

The construction of a railroad between Cairo, Ill., and Columbus, Ky., a distance of 24 miles, is proposed, which will give the Illinois Central Railroad a direct connection with the Mobile and Ohio Railroad and through that line with the Southern railroads generally.
