PREFACE

This work is designed to present some facts and principles of the physiology and psychology of the vocal organs in language so clear and concise that almost any one may intelligently exercise these organs so that the voice may be guarded, or, if lost, recovered in a comparatively short time, and cultivated for artistic achievements.

While most of the illustrations are anatomically correct, some are diagrammatically drawn for the special purpose of conveying a practical idea of the physiological actions of the vocal organs. There are many extensive and reliable text-books on human anatomy, physiology, psychology, and hygiene from which a student may gain more knowledge if he should care to go deeply into these studies. object is to establish the science and the art of tone production on a clear and logical basis and at the same time to make the principles so easily comprehended that a person of intelligence may get a sufficient understanding of the workings and uses of the voice at the least possible expenditure of time and mental effort, so that the course may be speedy and pleasurable and the result an increase of health and happiness.
