It is officially announced by the American Secretary for War that the following casualties were suffered and successes achieved by the United States Air Service during the war :

Enemy aeroplanes brought down 845, of which 491 were confirmed.

Balloons destroyed 82, of which 57 were confirmed. American aircraft lost: 271 aeroplanes and 45 balloons. When the armistice was signed the United States had at the front 45 squadrons. The American air forces in France had in all been supplied with 10,472 aeroplanes of various types, while the personnel amounted to 6,861 officers and 51,229 other ranks.

GILPIN, Lt., R.A.F

FATAL ACCIDENTS

An aeroplane which had flown from Trèves, piloted by a British officer and carrying an American general as a passenger, The pilot, capsized at Louvres, near Paris, on December 23. Lt. Gilpin, was killed, and the passenger, Gen. Rhodes, U.S. representative on the Armistice Commission at Spa, seriously injured.

Hurndall, Lt. C. D., R.A.F. Ellercant, Lt. W. A., R.A.F.

A double aeroplane fatality occurred at Hornchurch, Essex, on the evening of December 30, when Lt. Charles Douglas Hurndall, aged 21, and Lt. Wilfred Alan Ellercant, 19, came into collision. The two officers were instantly killed.

CAPT. W. LEEFE ROBINSON, V.C. Capt. William Leefe Robinson, V:C., died on December 31, 1918, at Stanmore, near Harrow. He was born at Tollidetta, South Coorg, Southern India, on July 14, 1895, and was the son of Mr. Horace Robinson, and grandson of Mr. W. C Robinson, R.N., Chief Naval Constructor at Portsmouth Dockyard. Was educated at St. Bees School, Cumberland, and, after travelling in France and Russia, he entered Sandhurst in August, 1914. In the following December he was gazetted to the Worcestershire Regt. Joining the Royal Flying Corps in France as an observer in March, 1915, he was wounded on May 9 in the arm while flying over Lille. On his recovery a few weeks later he learned to fly at Farnborough, took his ticket " on September 15, and was appointed a flying officer, R.F.C., three days later. He was attached to various stations in England for night flying, and before bringing down a Zeppelin at Cuffley had attacked another airship.

The first airman to bring down a Zeppelin in England-at Cuffley, on September 3. 1916-for which act he received the V.C., he was taken prisoner by the Germans in April, 1917, and only returned from captivity on December 14 last. He made three or four attempts to escape, and finally the Germans put him into solitary confinement in a small cell. Since his repatriation he had suffered severely as the result of his imprisonment in Germany, and for over a week had been ill with influenza, to which his death is attributed.

FROM ALL QUARTERS

DUTCH DEVELOPMENT IN AERONAUTICS

In a lecture by A. P. Kapteyn before the Dutch Royal Institution of Engineers, published in De Ingenieur, the statement is made that the Dutch Government has decided to build in Amsterdam a similar laboratory to M. Eiffel's to enable Dutch manufacturers to obtain all necessary information on aerodynamic problems first-hand.

After dealing with the advantages and disadvantages of the various types of rigids and non-rigids, the lecturer stated that Mr Boerner proposes to build dirigible airships of great size and recommends a length of 700 to 1,000 feet. The frame to consist of three deep aluminium girders with short pointed pieces. The cabins, motors and propellers all to be suspended between the girders. The cells containing hydrogen to be nearly rectangular, three being jointed together transversely and 20 to 30 longitudinally, and all to be firmly secured to the frame and end pieces.

One-third portion of the volume inside the external cover, which is to be of balloon material, would consist of cells completely filled with hydrogen, whilst the other spaces could be partly filled in order to provide expansion for the external pressure varying according to altitude. To prevent explosions, the space between the cells and the outer cover is filled with hydrogen.

The ship to be driven by 34 200 h.p. motors arranged in two rows, each motor to drive its own propeller, adjustable for driving in any required direction, viz., upwards, downwards, forwards or backwards. The ship can thus be completely controlled by the engines. It is proposed to balance the ship automatically both longitudinally and transversely by pumping gas from one end to the other.

An airship as above described would have the following advantages:

(a) All manoeuvring would be completely regulated by motors. A maximum useful load can be carried, as no ballast is required.

(b) Vertical movements cause no loss of gas and the position of the ship can be changed as frequently as desired in order to ascertain the most suitable air-currents for travelling.

(c) As the airship does not require ballast, there is no loss of weight and the power to rise remains constant. The ship may remain in the air for over a week.

(d) The radius of action would be almost unlimited and all danger of explosion removed.

The lecturer suggests that the airship should, on arrival at its destination, "land" in water, and that passengers should step out on a pier as from a steamer. Re-starting from the water should be effected by the motors for vertical movement. He does not anticipate any difficulties either in building or manoeuvring such an airship.

THE TRANS-ATLANTIC FLIGHT Lieutenant-Colonel R. Collishaw, D.S.O., who is returning to Nanaimo (Vancouver Island), states that he will fly the Atlantic early in April (for the Daily Mail £10,000 prize), starting from Newfoundland with a five-engine Handley-Page machine, in company with two pilots and a wireless operator. He estimates that the journey will take 24 hours.

Lieutenant Patrick O'Brien, the American airman in Britisn service who escaped from Germany, announces that he will try to be the first to make the Transatlantic flight. He hopes to make the attempt next April, accompanied by Captain I. F. Fuller, the American flyer, who is still in the U.S. forces in France, and Lieutenant C. C. Robinson, an American member of the British squadron O'Brien belonged to.

CANADA'S AIRWAYS

The Canadian Government has sanctioned Trans-Canadian aerial highways, consisting of two greater and three lesser airways, including the much-talked-of All-Red Route, running from St. John's, Newfoundland, through Quebec, Montreal, Ottawa, then following the Canadian Pacific Railway to West Vancouver and Victoria. Another airway starting at the same place will touch Sydney, Halifax, St. John, Fredericton, Quebec, Three Rivers, Montreal, follow the Grand Trunk Railway to Toronto, and thence to Sault Ste. Marie, Port Arthur, and Winnipeg. From the proposed Canadian airways spurs will connect New York and other cities.

FACULTY OF AVIATION

A number of universities, including McGill, have decided to add a Faculty of Aviation to their other branches of study, and arranged to secure aeroplanes from the Royal Air Force.

"Every university in Canada will receive one or more 'planes," it was stated at the Air Force Headquarters. Except for a few Curtiss machines, however, they will not be suited to actual flying, but will be useful in the teaching of aviation."

WITH H.M.S. HERCULES

The following were on the staff of the Allied Naval Commission in German waters appointed to arrange for the carrying out of the terms imposed by the armistice. The voyage was carried out on H.M.S. Hercules:

Brigadier-General Masterman, C.B.E., R.A.F., a pioneer of British airship construction, having been a pilot of the illfated Mayfly.

Commander W. G. Childs, U.S.N.

Colonel Clark-Hall, D.S.O., R.A.F., was the senior officer of the Sub-Commission which had the inspection of seaplane stations in hand.

Referring to the voyage of inspection of airship and seaplane stations, journeys of considerable distance were necessary, and although special trains were provided, the condition of the rolling-stock and engines made progress very slow.

Warship and merchant ship inspections were over at Wilhelmshaven in a couple of days, but the visits to air stations on the North Sea side took some time longer. Borkum, Heligoland, and Sylt were reached by destroyer; most of the others by land. Discipline and order were found much better in both airship and seaplane stations than in the warships, and in most of these it was very evident that every endeavour had been made to live up to the letter of the armistice agreement. The Norderney seaplane station-on the island made famous in "The Riddle of the ands"- -was reported as comparing most favourably with any other of the kind in France or England, while the great Nordholz Zeppelin station is, beyond comparison, the finest in the world. It was from here that practically all of the Englandbound raiders started, and not the least interesting sight observed there by the Sub-Commission was the famous L 14, with 24 visits to England to its credit. It was practically the only survivor of the first raiders, all of the rest having perished in one way or another. L 14 was being used as a school ship during the last months of the war, and the latest airships, such as the mighty L 71, outclass it completely for power, speed, size, and stability. Another interesting visit of one of the Sub-Commissions was to the wreck of the Zeppelin sheds at Tondern. It was this station which was so successfully bombed by aeroplanes launched from the Furious last summer, when two sheds and two Zeppelins were completely demolished.

The remaining forts and air stations were visited by the SubCommissions detailed for that work. The most interesting of these latter was the great experimental station at Warnemunde, where all of the new types which the Germans have had in process of development were seen and inspected. Permission to visit this remarkable station was granted only under protest, and the revelation of what was in the way of accomplishment there must have been one of the bitterest pills the Huns had to swallow.

INTERNATIONAL AIR TRAFFIC

A report from Paris dated December 23 states that the Echo de Paris learns that a conference will take place in Paris early next year of a number of Allied Powers with a view to establishing some sort of basis for future aerial navigation. Some of the principal questions to be discussed are the means to be taken to prevent airmen of various nationalities from avoiding the Customs barriers, and also how to prevent German postal or commercial aeroplanes from being converted in a few moments into bombing machines. The United States, Great Britain, France, Italy, and Belgium will be represented at the conference, the decisions of which, after being duly drawn up, will have to be accepted as part of the peace treaty by Germany and her former Allies.

TO THE NORTH POLE

The Aero Club of America on December 23 published the gist of a report prepared by a committee of distinguished men, headed by Rear-Admiral Peary, advocating an exploration tour of the North Polar regions by aeroplane. The tour, in the opinion of the committee, is entirely feasible. It is proposed to raise a fund of £50,000 and to carry the plan into execution next summer. The committee suggests the equipment of an expedition under the command of Captain Robert A. Bartlett. RearAdmiral Peary hopes to accompany the expedition to Etah.

For the major flight across the top of the earth a large seaplane will be employed, but many smaller aeroplanes will be carried by the expedition for short reconnaissance tours. In six weeks of fine weather in the Polar regions the committee believes that more can be accomplished by aeroplane than by years of work undertaken by ordinary expeditions.

It is announced that while the American aeroplane expedition to the North Pole is not to be launched until June next, plans have been quietly laid for a British expedition to start in April. The British expedition is being organised by Mr. F. W. Salisbury-Jones, of the Northern Exploration Co. It will travel via Spitzbergen, where, under the direction of Captain Wild, who was second in command of Sir Ernest Shackleton's South Polar venture, a landing place is in course of construction Lowe Sound, and where, says the Financier, a camp, with ab dant stores, has been established.
