FIRST VESPERS.

1 Ant. Jacob autem ge- Jacob begat Joseph, the nuit Joseph virum Mariæ, husband of Mary, of whom

de qua natus est Jesus, qui vocatur Christus.

2 Missus est angelus Gabriel a Deo ad virginem desponsatam viro, cui nomen erat Joseph, de domo David, et nomen virginis Maria.

3 Cum esset desponsata Mater Jesu Maria Joseph, antequam convenirent, inventa est in utero habens de Spiritu Sancto.

4 Joseph vir ejus, cum, esset justus, et nollet eam traducere, voluit occulte dimittere eam.

was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

The angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin's name was Mary.

When Mary the mother of Jesus was espoused to Joseph, before they came together she was found with child by the Holy Ghost.

Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to expose her to shame, was minded to put her away privately.

The angel of the Lord appeared unto Joseph, and saying, Joseph, son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost, and she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus. Dominum, p. 20.

A faithful man shall be greatly praised, and he that is the keeper of his Lord shall be glorified.

Joseph, rising up from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him,

The archangel Gabriel said unto Mary, With God no word shall be impossible. And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord, be it done to me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

y. In the sight of the angels will I sing unto thee, O my God.

Ry. I will worship towards thy holy temple, and sing praises unto thy name.

2 Cum redirent, remansit puer Jesus in Jerusalem, et non cognoverunt parentes ejus.

The parents of Jesus went up every year to Jerusalem at the solemn feast of the Pasch.

When they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem, and his parents knew it not.

3 Non invenientes Jesum, regressi sunt in Jerusalem, requirentes eum, et post triduum invenerunt illum in templo sedentem in medio doctorum, audientem et interrogantem

eos.

4 Dixit mater ejus ad illum: Fili, quid fecisti nobis sic? ecce pater tuus et ego dolentes, quæreba

mus te.

5 Descendit Jesus cum eis, et venit Nazareth, et erat subditus illis.

And not finding Jesus, they went back to Jerusalem, seeking him, and after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, hearing them and asking them questions.

His mother said unto him, Son, wherefore hast thou done so to us? behold thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.

Jesus went down with them, and came unto Nazareth, and was subject unto them.
