ART. 65. Milan, 1803.

These elements are remarkable for the clear and generally excellent method which is confpicuous throughout the whole of them. The very great knowledge poffeffed by the author, of Chemikry, Phyfics, and Natural History, concurs to the perfection of this work. It may be confidered as one of the beft guides that has hitherto ap peared on thefe important fubjects.

The selections forming this Chreftomathia are, r. from the Coran, p. 45; 2. from Natural History, chiefly paffages quoted in Bochart's Hierozoicon, according to the new edition by Rafenmüller; 3. from Abulleda's Description of Egypt, in the edition of Michaelis, with the addition of the various readings from Eichhorns Bibliothek, p. 80-106; 4. from Abdollatif's Hiftoria Egypti Compendium, five Chapters of the firft Book, and the three Chapters of the laft, but with fome omiffions; as, for inftance, what appears there in Chap. IV. concerning the Amûd Affarari. The reimpreffion is evidently made from the octavo edition, with corrections of the text by a learned naaive of Tripoli, Mr. Aryda; 5. from the Hamafa of Abi Temmam, p. 185-200; 6. two before inedited Macamáth the VII. and XI. of Hariri, with short scholia; 7, four dialogues, in the vulgar Arabic of Syria, by Mr. Aryda, p, 221-280, which appear to us the most valuable part of the work.

The Lexicon, which is in Arabic and Latin, is arranged, in our opinion very injudiciously, according to the order of the Hebrew and Syriac alphabets.

ART. 68. Teutsche Ornithologie, oder Naturgefchichte aller Voegel Teutfchlands in naturgetreuen Abbildungen und Befchreibungen.-Ger man Ornithology, or Natural Hiftory of all the Birds of Germany, defigned from Nature, with the exact Defeription of each, published by Borckhaufen, Lichthammer, C. W. Becker, Lembke, et Becker, Jun. Darmstadt, I.-V. livraifons. in fol. 1892.

The indefatigable zeal of the German naturalifts, and the manner in which they are feconded by artists of all kinds, make the works on thefe fubjects of a Semmering, Hoffmann, Hedvig, Jacquin, Blumenbach, Joerdens, Bechbein, Efper, of the author of the Botanic Garden of Heidelberg, &c. peculiarly interefting.

Of this number is the collection which is here noticed; in which the defign is carried to the greatett perfection; the defcriptions are precife, and prefent the characters of the fpecies, its properties, the places where it is found, its nourishinent, propagation, ufe, &c. The whole evidently fhows, that the authors have confulted, and diligently copied nature. They have repeated in Latin the diftinétive characters; and have added, in the fame language, a fuccinct descripsion of each individualThey have not numbered the plates, for that every one may clafs them according to his own method.

To Mr. Overton, not moved by his peremptory, mufi infert, but by a real love of juftice, we fhall here return fuch an anfwer as the present time will admit. We perceive that, in the hafte of printing a periodical work, Churchman was fuffered to pals inftead of Churchmen, in reporting the title of his book: and, having once fo paffed, has been repeated, the title not being a fubject of very anxious examination; whole for wholly, pi 484; received for reviewed, p. 485; this for their, p. 491; are allo, as he fuppofes, errors of the prefs. To the whole remainder of his Letter, not to begin an altercation which might probably run to a confiderable extent, we hall only reply, at prefent, that our intention is to reprefent, not to mifreprefent, him. But we promise him, for the fake of juice, and as the difpute is of fome moment that when we fhall have reviewed, his book completely, we will alfo review our own critique, with the aid of his remarks; and retra&t from it all affertions whieh fhall appear to have Been hallily or incorrectly made. But, from what we obferve in his prefent Letter, we do not conceive, that the amount of thofe facrifices to juffice, will be confiderable.

A Cor

A Correfpondent, figning himfelf Spes, adverts to one of the matters noticed by Mr. Overton, and complains that, in printing his quotation from Archbishop Secker, we have omitted the three dots, which imply that a paffage was left out. We perceive that this is true; but does not his omiffion of the paffage, whether marked or not, imply that it contained nothing material to the fentence? Whereas, our restoration of it, proves that it does contain. what is very material; and how many perfons would turn to the Archbishop's Charge to afcertain this point, even with the intimation of the dots ?

Dr. Valpy delires us to mention, that the Elegantia Latina, fpoken of as his work in our laft number, p. 570, was not compiled by himfelf, but by his brother, the Rev. Edward Valpy.

In answer to a mere furmife of ours, that his Harmony of the Epistles had not been adequately advertifed, Mr. P. Roberts informs us, that the fact was not fo. He fays, also, that our reviewer miftook the numbers which were merely references from the Harmony to the Summary, for numbers of the fections, and therefore attributed to him a want of care, which was not real. We certainly found a want of clearness in the modes of reference; but if that led us to impute another fault improperly, we are glad to remove the imputation from a work, which we confider as entitled to much respect and commendation.

We muft repeat to our correfpondents, who favour us with new editions of books, very frequently reprinted, that it is the object of a Review to examine new Books, not new Editions,.. unless the circumftances of thofe editions have fomething in them very particular or important. `

LITERARY INTELLIGENCE.

A fplendid work, on the Egyptian Antiquities furrendered by Menou to the victorious army of General Hutchinson, and now depofited in the British Museum, is now proceeding, under the care of Colonel Turner, by whom they were brought over. It will be illuflrated by accurate plates.

Dr. Munkhoufe, of Wakefield, whofe occafional Sermons we have often noticed with commendation, is preparing to publifh three volumes of his difcourfes; which we hope will meet with the patronage they deferve.

We are informed that the third and last volume of the improved edition of Huichins's Hiftory of Dorfetfhire is in the prefs. The fecond has very lately appeared.

We hear alfo of a volume of Poems intended to be pub. lifhed by Mr. Hackett, of the Temple, to be entitled Feelings of Nature.
