2. Every deposit received by the Colonial Treasurer shall be entered by him, at the time of receiving the same, in the depositor's book, and such entry shall be attested by the Colonial Treasurer and by the dated stamp of his Office, and the attestation by the Colonial Treasurer shall be conclusive evidence of the claim of such depositor to the re-payment of his deposit, with interest thereon, upon demand made by him upon the Colonial Treasurer.

3. 4. No person appointed to carry this Ordinance into effect shall disclose the name of any depositor, or the amount which may be deposited or withdrawn by any depositor, except to such person or persons as may be appointed to assist in carrying this Ordinance into operation, and any Officer so offending shall forfeit and pay a sum not exceeding One hundred pounds sterling.

5. The interest payable to the parties making such deposits shall be at the rate of Two pounds Ten shillings per centum per annum, but such interest shall not be calculated on any amount less than One pound, or some multiple thereof, and shall not commence until the first day of the calendar month next following the day of deposit, and shall cease on the first day of the calendar month in which such deposit shall be withdrawn.

6. Interest on deposits shall be calculated on the 31st day of December in every year, and shall be added to and become part of the principal money.

7. The monies paid as aforesaid into the Colonial Treasury under the authority of this Ordinance shall, so far as practicable, be invested in England in such one or more securities yielding interest respectively as Her Majesty's Principal Secretary of State for the Colonies shall from time to time name: Provided always that no part of such monies shall be applied in any way to the purposes of this Colony, or be invested in any loan of money raised or to be raised in this Colony for any purpose whatever.

8. It shall be lawful to raise any sum or sums of money that may from time to time be required for the re-payment as aforesaid of any deposits made in pursuance of this Ordinance by the sale or sales of the whole or a part of any such securities as aforesaid: Provided that if at any time or times the monies arising from such sale or sales shall be insufficient to pay the lawful claims of every

A.

1. The Savings Bank shall be open for business during such hours and on such days as the Treasurer with the approval of the Governor shall determine, which will be notified by Public Notice from time to time. The business of the Savings Bank shall be conducted by such Officer or Officers of the Treasury as the Treasurer shall appoint in that behalf.

2. Deposits of one shilling, or of any number of shillings, or of pounds and shillings, will be received from any Depositor at the Savings Bank, provided the deposits made by such Depositor in any year ending on the 31st December do not exceed £100, and provided the total amount standing in such Depositor's name in the books of the Treasurer do not exceed £500.

For computing the maximum amount of deposit allowable for a Depositor under this Regulation, if such deposit is raised so as to be in excess of the said maximum by reason of any additions thereto by way of simple interest, on the said maximum being credited to such Depositor, and so long as such interest is not added to the said maximum for the purposes of subsequent computations of interest thereon, the excess so created shall not be deemed unlawful.

2a. No deposit will be received for a less period than one calendar month, and it shall be lawful for the Treasurer to retain any deposit for such period. (15th May, 1895.)

3. Every Depositor, on making a first deposit on his own behalf, shall be required to specify his name, occupation, and residence, and make and sign the following Declaration, to be witnessed by some Officer of the Treasury appointed under these Regulations or by some person known to such Officer, or by a Clergyman of the Church of England or other Minister of Religion resident in the Colony, or by a District Commissioner or a Justice of the Peace; and if such Declaration, or any part thereof, shall not be true, the Depositor making the same shall forfeit and lose all right and title to his deposits.

If the Depositor does not receive such acknowledgment within ten days from the day on which he made the deposit, he must apply for the same to the Treasurer by letter, and if necessary he must renew his application to the Treasurer until he receives such acknowledgment.

5. The interest will be calculated to the 31st December in every year, and will then be added to, and become part of, the principal money.

6. Deposits may be made by a Trustee on behalf of another person, in the joint names of such Trustee and the person on whose account such money shall be so deposited; but repayment of the same, or any part thereof, shall not be made without the receipt or receipts of both the said parties, or the survivor of them, or the Executors or Administrators of such survivor, whose receipt or receipts, signed either personally or by agent appointed by Power of Attorney, which Power of Attorney may be executed by an infant of or exceeding the age of 18 years, shall alone be a valid discharge, except in case of insanity or imbecility of the party on whose behalf the deposits were made, when the Treasurer may, on proof of the fact to his satisfaction, and provided that no Guardian or Committee of the estate of such person shall have been appointed by the Court, allow repayment to be made to the Trustee alone. The following Declaration must be made in the case of such deposit :

And in case any such Declaration shall not be true, the Depositor making the same shall forfeit and lose all right and title in or to any deposit and in or to any funds of the Lagos Treasury Savings Bank.

7. Deposits may be made by, or for the benefit of, any person under 21 years of age, and repayment shall be made to such minor after the age of 7 years in the same manner as if he were of full age. In the case of minors under the age of 7 years, the Declaration must be made by one of the parents or a guardian on behalf of the minor.
