An Act for maintaining and keeping in Repair certain Roads and Bridges made in Scotland, for the Purpose of Military Communication; and for making more effectual Provision for maintaining and repairing Roads made, and Bridges built, in Scotland, under the Authority of the Parliamentary Commiffioners for Highland Roads and Bridges.

[18th July 1814.] W 7HEREAS certain Roads and Bridges for the Purpose of Military Communication have been made, and hitherto • maintained in the Highlands of Scotland, at the Public Expence; which Roads and Bridges are no longer neceffary for fuch Military • Communication, but for other Purposes fome of them ought neverthelefs to be maintained in Repair: And Whereas an Act was paffed in the Forty third Year of the Reign of His present Majesty, • intituled An Ad for granting to His Majesty the Sum of Tecenty • thousand Pounds, to be issued and applied towards making Roads and Building Bridges in the Highlands of Scotland; and for enabling the Proprietors of Land in Scotland to charge their Eftates with a Proportion of the Expence of making and keeping in Repair Roads and Bridges in the Highlands of Scotland: And Whereas, in Addition to the faid Sum of Twenty thoufand Pounds, the further • Sum of One hundred and twenty thousand Pounds has at fundry

times been fince granted, in further Execution of the faid Act; by means of which many useful Roads and Bridges have been made ⚫ and completed, and others are now in courfe of being made, under ⚫ feveral Contracts and Agreements entered into by the Commiffioners and others, according to the Provifions and Regulations of the faid Act: And Whereas another Act was paffed in the Fiftieth Year 50 G.3.c.43 of the Reign of His prefent Majefty, intituled An Act for maintaining and keeping in Repair Roads made and Bridges built in Scotland, under the Authority of the Parliamentary Commiffioners for Highland Roads and Bridges, whereby the Charge of keeping in Repair fuch Roads and Bridges was laid upon the feveral Counties wherein the faid Roads and Bridges are fituate; and by the faid Act divers Provifions were made for fuch Repairs, which • Provifions have been found to be inadequate to the end propofed : And Whereas it is expedient to make new Regulations for the Maintenance and Repair of the Military Roads and Bridges and alfo of the Roads and Bridges made and completed, or which fhall ‹ hereafter be made and completed, under the Authority of the Parliamentary Commiffioners for Highland Roads and Bridges as aforefaid: May it therefore please Your Majefty that it may be enacted; and be it enacted by The King's Moft Excellent Majefty, by and with the Advice and Confent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this prefent Parliament affembled, and by the Authority of the fame, That, from and after the paffing

of this Act, the faid recited A&t paffed in the Fiftieth Year of 50 G. 3. c. 43. the Reign of His prefent Majefty fhall be and the fame is hereby repealed. repealed.

II. And be it enacted, That the Commiffioners appointed in and Appointment of by virtue of the Act paffed in the Forty third Year of the Reign Commiffioners. of His prefent Majefty, hereinbefore recited, fhall be, and they are 43 G. 3. c. 80. hereby appointed Commiffioners for the Purpofes of this Act, together with the Lord Keeper of the Privy Seal of Scotland, and the firft Commiffioner of His Majefty's Woods, Forefts and Land Revenue in England, who are hereby appointed Commiffioners for carrying this Act, and alfo the before mentioned Act into Execution; any Three of which Commiffioners fhall conftitute a Quorum, of Quorum. which One of the Commiffioners appointed by virtue of his Office fhall always be one; and at all Meetings of the Commiffioners, which Meetings fhall be held in London or Westminster, the Chairman fhall have a cafting Vote in cafe of an Equality of Votes.

III. And Whereas it is expedient that the Maintenance and Repair of the Military Roads and Bridges, and alfo of the Roads and Bridges made under the Authority of the Parliamentary Commiffioners for Highland Roads and Bridges, fhould be placed under the Direction and Management of the Commiffioners hereby appointed; Be it enacted, That, from and after the paffing of this Commissioners Act, the faid Commiflioners fhall, and they are hereby empowered may appoint to appoint and employ an Infpector of fuch Roads and Bridges in Officers. Scotland as have been made wholly or in part at the Public Expence, and fuch other Superintendents or Overfeers of Roads and other Officers, as they fhall fee fit; and to pay and allow to each and every Salary. of them fuch Sum or Sums of Money annually or otherwife, as the faid Commiffioners fhall think proper, in Compenfation of their

Services.
