cision. Mr. Phillipps's work, however, labours under this disadvantage, that it is confined to an examination of the general principles of evidence, and does not treat of the rules applicable to particular subjects and actions, otherwise than as they illustrate those general principles. Mr. Starkie, on the other hand, reserving the first part of his work

chiety for the discussion of general principles, devotes two closely printed volumes to a digest, alphabetically arranged, of the rules of evidence and the proof applicable to particular subjects and actions. It is in this that the great practical superiority and utility of Mr. Starkie's book consists."-The Jurist, No. 269.

COMFORT in a NIGHTCAP!-Gentlemen often complain of their inability to keep their caps on all night, which renders them liable to colds, deranges and injures the hair, and soils the pillow. POWELL'S TEMPLER CAP (registered Act 6 & 7 Vict., No. 30), obViates these objections, keeps on during the night, keeps the hair smooth, and, being uniform in substance, dispenses with the wad or roll occasioned by first pulling down and then turning up the old nightcap, (confessedly the ugliest article a man wears). The new Cap, resembling somewhat the helmet worn by the Knights Templars, is more sightly, and will really be found (simple as it appears) to assist materially in the confort of a night's repose. The Templar Cap is fashioned from the coolest to the warmest material, and will prove an acquisition in travelling to invalids and those who wear wigs. Half-a-dozen franked to any part of the Kingdom, on receipt of a Post-office order for 7s. 6d. for stout quality, 10s. 6d. for medium, and 13s. 6d for fine; or single caps, 1s. 6d., 2., and 2s. 6d.; in silk, from 5s. to 15s. The size of the head should be sent, measured round the forehead, and round the head under the chin. Exchanged if not approved.

carbon, it is indestructible, except by fire. It dries with a gloss, and follows every movement of the pen with the greatest facility. As it flows more freely than common ink, it requires, for fine writing, a finely pointed pen. For records, it realises what has long been hoped for-namely, a durability equal to printing. Broad-nibbed pens, for full large writing, will not be required to the same extent for this article. It has no action tendency slowly to subside; the necessity of occasionally shaking the whatever upon steel pens. Carbon, not being a soluble matter, has a inkholder is therefore apparent. The inkholders contrived by me are best adapted for the use of this article.

N. B. This ink writes more agreeably after it has been a day or two in use. It is also admirably calculated for rapid writing. by all Booksellers and Stationers. HENRY STEPHENS, 54, Stamford-street, Blackfriars-road, and sold

beg to thank the Gentlemen who have honoured them with their patronage, and to inform others, that the PATENT ELASTIC or ALBERT CRAVAT, which has been so much extolled, is not made like any common Stock, but of a beautiful light elastic frame, (which will last for years). It fits the inferior maxilla, or lower jaw, and the clavicle, or collar-bone, so that the head may move in any direction without the cravat ever touching or pressing the throat-a desideratum never before obtained.

SCIENTIFIC APPLICATION OF HEAT.

"On the veracity of a gentleman on whose word we can rely, we have great pleasure in confirming the reported excellence of the economical cooking apparatus invented by Messrs. Burbidge and Healy, of Fleet-street. Our friend states that he has been more or less acquainted with the constructions hitherto adopted for the past twenty years, but that he has never found any other cooking apparatus to answer so com

pletely. He has one of these in constant use, and it is without a fault.
The advantages are, great economy, (it costs only about 4d. a day in
fuel), cleanliness, ease in cleaning the flues, no surface heat to annoy the
kitchen, and a perfect cure for a smoky chimney. With all these excel-
lences, there is an oven always hot, an open fire for roasting, a hot plate
for all the other operations of cookery, and a fountain of boiling water
day or night. Science appears to have been completely successful in
perfecting this invention.-From the Patriot.
To be seen in daily use at BURBIDGE & HEALY'S, 130, Fleet-street.
