If you can do so will you please send it to the College for the date mentioned.

For '96 in Rome,

J. F. MCGILLICUDDY.

We are happy to announce that this invaluable memento was exposed in the chapel on "the date mentioned," as a gift to be prized for its cherished religious associations, and for the message of lasting regard which it brings to "Alma Mater" from her sons beyond the deep.

On Monday, May 6th, the "Rector's Feast Day," the annual occasion of a banquet for the "whole house," was celebrated. It is in accordance with an established custom for the president to thus grant one day each spring on which a relaxation from class duties is granted to all and a general good time allowed. This year, Rev. Father Rector was not the only entertainer, for his efforts to engender a feeling of mutual good-will between himself and the students under his charge was heartily reciprocated by the student body.

Immediately after chapel on the night preceding the feast day, Father Lehy was invited to Fenwick Hall, where, to his complete surprise, an enjoyable entertainment was given in his honor. From 'or's "God-speed and Farewell" to the closing chorus, "Hand to Hand, Boys," there was not a dull moment in the programme ably carried out by Messrs. Mitchell, Sullivan, Moran, Reardon, McGrath,

O'Brien, Green, Reilly, Pooler, Dyer, King, Landers and Duggan. Fr. Lehy thanked the boys for their unselfish efforts, and hoped that the same unselfishness would be their everpresent companion in life. This notable departure makes the "Rector's Feast" of 'or a red letter event in the history of these annual holidays.

The progress on the new athletic field is no longer on paper, for the excavations are well under way. The "Greeting" of the Athletic Association to the alumni gives many interesting facts and figures relative to this work. On May 6th the contract was awarded at a cost of $10,771.67, and Mr. Hennessey, the successful bidder, has his men already hard at work.

True, the requisite sum of money has not yet been contributed, but, rather than delay the work longer, Fr. Hanselman has issued the following outline of his plans:

"The aggregate contributions by alumni, students and friends of the college

=

$5992.

"Unless an immediate increase of this amount is obtained the field will be only partially completed, as follows:

[blocks in formation]

and the top dressing will have to be deferred until more funds are secured."

However, with the returns from this year's base-ball games and the generosity of its friends. to rely upon, there is a feeling of confidence that the necessary amount will be on hand when needed. If this confidence is justified, athletic games will be held on the completed field next

season.

A grand souvenir programme containing the names of all the donors will be published, unless some of the donors stipulate otherwise. A voting contest has also been determined upon, to be governed by these rules: 1st, each fifty cents donation will entitle to one vote, and 2d, the person receiving the largest number of votes will receive a present of $500.

The circular closes with the following query: "Query: Is not the old field satisfactory?" "Answer: The new field is constructed not because the old one is undesirable, but because with the increased number of students it cannot accommodate all for their games."

ATHLETIC COMMENT.

HOLY CROSS VS. FORDHAM.

Holy Cross was defeated by Fordham on Saturday, April 27th, in a game which was characterized by heavy hitting on the part of Fordham and inability to bat safely by Holy Cross. Charles McKenna, who was a pitcher on the Holy Cross team three years ago, was in the box for Fordham and pitched a magnificent game, having the opposing batters at his mercy and striking out sixteen of them. Coakley also pitched a good game for Holy Cross, but his support was poor and Fordham batsmen hit in great luck.

The batting of Holy Cross was very weak and most of the men pulled away from the plate every time up. They could do nothing with McKenna's swinging outdrop. The Fordham fielders had little to do, but Butler supported McKenna in splendid style. For Holy Cross, Connor and Duggan played a good fielding game and Skelly batted in fine form. The hitting of McKenna, Mitchell and Joyce of Fordham was noteworthy.

HOLY CROSS vs. TUFTS.

Holy Cross defeated Tufts for a second time this season at Medford, May 1st. Holy Cross improved very much over their batting in the Fordham game and batted the Tufts twirlers for 10 hits. Perkins was batted out of the box in the seventh and Curran, who succeeded him, did not fare much better, Holy Cross pounding out four runs off his delivery in the eighth inning.

All of Holy Cross' errors were costly, Tufts' runs all being unearned. Coakley's pitching was very effective, allowing only six scattered hits and giving
