The valedictory was as follows:

"Fellow-students,-There are times in the life of all men, at the close of certain periods, when they feel as if a volume in their career had been fully completed, when they close the book with reverence and tenderly lay it aside to be glanced over in the future, that they might read what therein they had written. To-day we close the book in which has been written the story of our college life; to-morrow we begin on a fresh, clean page the long, long story of the life that shall end only with our departure from this world.

"What we have written in the book we lay aside has been under the guidance of loving friends and kind masters, who have stood by our sides correcting with gentleness the many faults of our college career; with the tenderness of the religious, who looks not so much to the development of the intellectual in youth, but to the formation of that perfectly developed being in whom all the faculties, spiritual and intellectual, unite in one grand unison to form the noblest work in God's creation-the man. They have labored for this result under the guidance of him of the large heart and the tender soul, whose memory the class of 1900 shall always cherish with sincerest and deepest affection. Their work has been completed and our parting word is a fervent God bless them!'

"But, Oh! the heavy change the future has in store for us. The loving friend will be replaced by the stern task-master of the world. No gentle reproof will be given, no appeal to our better

nature will he make when we have erred, but without the least misgiving shall he gloat over our misfortunes, and turn to the next for better results. But when we would err, we shall not be left to struggle unaided; there is the teaching of the college that will follow us into the battle of life. The lessons of fortitude and courage we have learned within the walls of Holy Cross will be the bulwark behind which to shield ourselves.

"The college and church look to us for the accomplishment of great things in these days when Catholic education is so bitterly attacked by those who, while they pose as the most liberal and broad in collegiate progress, are in reality the narrowest. We must struggle by our worth, by the nobility of our Christian character, against the unwarranted criticisms of the enemies of all that savors of Catholicity. Success cannot but attend our efforts if we are true to ourselves, to our college, to our religion. And when the pinnacle of our ambition has been reached, let us, with gratitude, turn to the kind mother who has been our guidance, our inspiration, and with our honored alumnus exclaim: Holy Cross! Alma Mater! Your graduates salute you! May they be worthy of you. Their best wishes are for you, as your best wishes are for them. Alma Mater! Vivat, floreat, crescat!"

At the conclusion of the graduatThe Banquet. ing exercises the alumni and guests repaired to the Students' Refectory, which was elaborately decorated for the occasion. Towards the end of the banquet Fr. Lehy, after a few

THE BRISTOL COUNTY ALUMNI MEETING.

Bristol County graduates and former students of Holy Cross College assembled at the Quequechan Club, Fall River, Monday evening, June 25th, to tender a reception to the beloved president of that institution, Rev. John F. Lehy, S. J., and to form a permanent alumni association. To say that this dual purpose was fulfilled would do justice neither to the unqualified success of the gathering nor to the magnificent efforts of those who arranged it. It was an occasion which will live long in the memory of those who attended; new friendships were made, old ones were renewed and happy college days were lived over again in reminis

cence.

The function was provided over by Dr. M. Kelly of Fall River, the oldest graduate in that vicinity, who filled the position of toastmaster in an exceedingly pleasant manner. Those present were: Rev. John F. Lehy, S. J., Rev. Dr. Lennon, Charles P. Ryan, Gilbert Cuttle, Jr., H. F. F. Nickerson, Dr. O. J. Eagan, Dr. William E. Synan, Rev. Fr. Curran, James T. Cummings, W. F. Kennedy, Judge John J. McDonough, John A. Connolly, Dr. M. H. Shea, J. J. Tuite, T. E. Greene and Frank D. Monahan of Fall River; James P. Doran, W. J. Glasgow, John McCullough and Dr. M. V. Sylvia of New Bedford.
