LVI. THE PROPHECIES OF OUR LORD AND SAVIOUR
JESUS CHRIST IN THE OLD TESTAMENT, AND

THEIR FULFILMENT IN THE NEW TESTAMENT,
CHRONOLOGICALLY ARRANGED.

"When the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, to redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.”Gal. iv. 4, 5.

As it is interesting to search for Christ in the ancient prophecies, according to his own command; so is it highly confirmatory of our faith, to behold their wonderful accomplishment in the writings of the Apostles and Evangelists.

It will, therefore, be useful to place the Prophecy and its Fulfilment in juxtaposition; and while beholding the Wisdom and Power of God, in so minutely fulfilling the purposes of his love, we shall exclaim with the joy of Philip: "We have found him of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.'

PROPHECY." The Lord God said unto the serpent,......I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel,”Gen. iii. 14, 15.

"The Lord hath created a new thing in the earth, A woman shall compass a man.”—Jer. xxxi. 22.

"Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from afar; The Lord hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name."-Isa. xlix. 1.

"Unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoul

der; and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice, from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this."-Isa. ix. 6, 7.

FULFILMENT. "In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God, unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, to a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured....... Fear not, Mary; for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee; therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God."-Luke i. 26-35.

PROPHECY." Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign: Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”. Isa. vii. 14.

FULFILMENT.

"Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her

away privily. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife; for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel; which being interpreted, is, God with us.”Matt. i. 18-23.

PROPHECY." But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting."-Micah v. 2.

"And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots."-Isa. xi. 1.

FULFILMENT.- "And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Cesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed........And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, (because he was of the house and lineage of David,) to be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her first-born son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.". -Luke ii. 1-7.

PROPHECY." Sing, O ye heavens; for the Lord hath done it shout, ye lower parts of the

earth: break forth into singing, ye mountains, O forest, and every tree therein: for the Lord hath redeemed Jacob, and glorified himself in Israel.”

Isa. xliv. 23.

FULFILMENT. "And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them; and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day, in the city of David, a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.... And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. ."—Luke ii. 8-14.

PROPHECY." And now, saith the Lord that formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob again to him, Though Israel be not gathered, yet shall I be glorious in the eyes of the Lord, and my God shall be my strength. And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant, to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel; I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth."-Isa. xlix. 5, 6.

FULFILMENT.-"And when the days of her purification, according to the law of Moses, were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord......And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him. And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the

law, then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: for mine eyes have seen thy salvation. Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people: a light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.”— Luke ii. 22-32.

PROPHECY.- "I shall see him, but not now; I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel."-Numb. xxiv. 17.

FULFILMENT.-" Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judea for thus it is written by the prophet; And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a governor, that shall rule my people Israel."-Matt. ii. 1-6.

PROPHECY." The kings of Tarshish and of the isles shall bring presents: the kings of Sheba and Seba shall offer gifts. Yea, all kings shall fall down before him; all nations shall serve him."Psa. lxxii. 10, 11.

"All they from Sheba shall come: they shall bring gold and incense; and they shall show forth the praises of the Lord."-Isa. lx. 6.

"The Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising."—Isa. lx. 3.
