ftanding to know my Duty, and the Heart and Will to do it: Confirm me, O Lord, in these holy Refolutions to amend my Life acording to thy holy Word, and to endeavour daily to increase in Holiness and Virtue; to add one Degree of Grace and Virtue to another, till I come unto a perfect Man" in Chrift Jefus: All which I humbly beg for the Sake of the fame Jefus Chrift thy Son, our Saviour and Redeemer. Amen.

A Prayer for the Grace of Thankfulness.

Lmighty God, who of thy tender Mercy

didit give thy only Son to fuffer Death upon the Crofs for our Redemption, I humbly befeech thee to make me thoroughly fenfible of, and give me the most unfeigned Gratitude for, this moft precious Gift. O grant that I may always remember, but efpecially when I am at thy holy Table, with the moft fincere and moft lively Gratitude, this wonderful Miracle of Mercy, which passeth all Knowledge. O may I always be glad and rejoice in this thy Salvation; may my Heart always burn within me at the Thoughts of it.---Receive, O Lord, my fincere Thanks, and accept of my unfeigned Sorrow that they are fo cold, and fo difproportionate to the unmeasurable Favour which I commemorate. Lord, what is Man, that thou haft been fo mindful of him, and the Son of Man, that thou haft fo vifited him? O let my Mouth

Increafe in me fuch due Senfe of all thy Mercies, that all the Temptations of the World, the Flefh, and the Devil, may never be able to quench it; but that being enliven❜d and quicken'd thereby, I may press towards the Mark, for the Prize of the high Calling of God in Chrift Fefus: So that having frequently remember'd my Saviour at this holy Table with all thofe pious and holy Affections he has fo just a Claim to, he may, in his due Time, admit me to drink of this Cup new in the Kingdom of God", among the Bleffed who shall be called unto the Marriage Supper of the Lamb. A Prayer for Charity.

God, who haft taught us that all our Doings without Charity are nothing worth, fend thy holy Ghoft and pour into. <s our Hearts that most excellent Gift, without "which whofoever liveth is counted dead be "fore thee."--- How unworthy fhould I be to appear at thy holy Table, and take of that Bread of Love, if I entertained any Sentiments of Hatred against any of my Brethren. O fuffer me not, thou God of Love, to fall into a Fault fo contrary to the Spirit of the Gofpel in. general, and to the particular End and Defign of this bleffed Ordinance! Let this new Communion rather contribute to enlarge my Bowels

And above all Things let us put on Charity, which is the Bond of Perfectness; and let the Peace of God rule in our Hearts, to the which we are called in one Body, Amen.

DIRECTIONS.

WHEN the Sermon is ended, let us endeavour to compofe our Thoughts, and raise our Affections to a devout Attendance of the fucceeding Sacramental Service. The Numbers that depart out of the Church may fuggeft to us a melancholy Confideration upon the Neglect and Contempt that is thereby thrown upon the Ordidinance of our Lord and Mafter. How unaccountable it is for the Difciples of Jefus Chrift to think that he will be pleafed with our hear ing a Sermon (the leaft Part by much, if any Part at all, of Christian Worship) whilst we

live in the habitual Neglect of this most folemn Act of Religion!

When the Offertory begins, the devout Communicant may be profitably employed in foort Meditations and Afpirations fuitable to fome of the Paffages of Scripture then reading, especially fuch as at the Time prefent do most affect him: As for Example, Let your Light fo fhine before Men, &c.
