address just delivered by President Martin be submitted to the State Bar Association with request that it be included in its annual report of addresses.

Senator A. A. Leeper moved that a committee on Resolutions and a committee on Place and Nominations, and a special committee to prepare Resolutions on the death of ex-president McCarl and other officers and members of the Bar of the district be appointed. Motion prevailed.

President Martin appointed on the general committee on Resolution-H. M. Waggoner, G. H. Wilson and J. J. Neiger; special committee on Resolutions-A. A. Leeper, Carl E. Epler and D. H. Glass; the committee on Place and Nominations-L. A. Jarman, T. H. Worthington and H. D.

Lewis.

A recess was then taken for dinner at the First Congregational Church banquet room. The banquet consisted of a wild duck dinner and was tendered to the visitors by the Cass County Bar Association and it was certainly some dinner.

At the conclusion of the banquet Justice Floyd E. Thompson of Rock Island, member of the Supreme Court, addressed the banqueters very ably and interestingly.

At the conclusion of Justice Thompson's address the meeting reassembled at the City Court room, which by the way, is the same court room in which the famous William, (better known as Duff) Armstrong was tried for murder and acquitted, his attorney being Abraham Lincoln, and which trial has become a historical incident in history and has elicited considerable controversy as to whether or not Abraham Lincoln was guilty of unethical conduct in defending his client. Upon reassembling President Logan Hay addressed the meeting and called upon a number of the members of the Bar to discuss the question of how to better perfect the state organization and attain more general cooperation among the lawyers of the state. Among those he called upon were T. H. Worthington of Morgan County, U. G. Butcher, of Fulton County, W. I. Manny of Brown

County, W. H. Dieterich of Cass, Carl E. Epler of Adams, William Schlagenhauf of Adams, and H. M. Billingsley of Schuyler County.

Vice-President Silas H. Strawn delivered a very able address relating to the new law on corporations in Illinois. L. A. Jarman, member of the Constitutional Convention, delivered a very complete and analytical address on the Judiciary Act in the proposed constitution and discussed in a general way, in the absence of others who were to handle the subjects, other articles in the proposed constitution.

George H. Wilson, in the absence of Chairman Waggoner, presented the following recolutions and moved their adoption:

“The lawyers of the Fourth Supreme Judicial District of Illinois, in convention assembled, at Beardstown, Illinois, recognize the desirability both from a professional and personal standpoint of meeting from time to time for the purpose of the advancement of the profession and the renewal of old acquaintances and the formation of new

ones.

The value and pleasure of this meeting are second to none. We highly appreciate the hospitality of the local bar and of the citizens of this thriving community and we would not forget the ladies of the Congregational Church who have so graciously served the dinner furnished in part by the prowess of the hunters of the local bar.

We note with pleasure the increasing spirit of fraternity manifested by the lawyers of this district in their generous attendance upon the district meetings which we believe to have been wisely inaugurated by the State Bar Association. We believe it beneficial to the practicing lawyers to band themselves together in local bar associations, they in turn to form component parts of the district and state organizations.

We thank Justice Floyd E. Thompson of the Supreme Court, Hon. Silas H. Strawn of the Cook County Bar, President Logan Hay and Hon. L. A. Jarman of the Schuyler County Bar for their presence and valued contributions to this meeting by their interesting addresses. Harry M. Waggoner, Geo. H. Wilson, J. J. Neiger."

Resolution adopted.

Chairman Epler of the Special committee on resolutions

submitted the following resolutions and moved their adoption:

"Be it resolved by the District Bar Association of the Fourth Supreme Judicial District of the State of Illinois:

That we hereby express our regret for the death, and pay tribute to the memory of, one of our honored members and former officers, Judge Lyman McCarl, of Quincy, Illinois, who died suddenly at his desk in his law office on April 13, 1920.

We adopt this memorial to his work as County Judge, especially in the juvenile court, and also as chairman of the Legal Advisory Board of the City of Quincy in the late war, and in his general services as officer and member of many civic bodies in the community where he lived, as well as in the Illinois County and Probate Judges Association, and as a member of the State, District and Local Bar Associations.

Be it further resolved that we hereby regret the deaths of the following members of the Bar of this District since our last meeting, and commemorate their services rendered as members of the legal profession:

Homer M. Swope, of Quincy, Adams County, an able and honorable lawyer, died last October.

Theodore C. Poling, of Quincy, Illinois, also departed this life in August; he was a lawyer who won the confidence of all in an active business life.

Charles C. Crossland, a capable and useful lawyer and banker of Bowen, Hancock County, departed this life on last Monday, November 22, at his home, after an honorable career:

John B. Brown, an able and prominent attorney of Monmouth, Warren County, passed away this last summer, after having won honors in the legal profession.

The above honorable members of our profession will be missed, not only by the Bar, but also by the respective communities in which they lived.
