PREFACE.

E had hoped to arrange this publication after the manner of Pollard's Supplement to the Code of Virginia. Knowing, however, that on account of the many private pension bills, the appearance of the Acts of the General Assembly would be long delayed, and that there was an urgent necessity for the profession to have at once the laws of a general and permanent nature, we had to content ourselves with sending out the work in its present shape.

This publication is intended to be an appendix to Pollard's Supplement to the Code of Virginia, and, like that work, its aim has been towards conformity with the Code. Thus many tax laws, being subject to frequent changes, have been omitted. A complete compilation of such laws, however, are accessible to the profession, being published under the supervision of the Auditor of Public Accounts immediately after the adjournment of each session of the Legislature. Some laws of a local nature are here printed, either because they are in amendment to the Code, or refer to such local matters as the revisers of 1887 thought wise to print in the Code.

The list of decisions construing or affecting the statute law of Virginia since the publication of the Supplement will be found useful, as also the references to notes and articles in the Virginia Law Register.

For Summary of Laws Passed, see Colored Pages 173-176.

REFERENCES TO DECISIONS CONSTRUING OR AFFECTING THE CODE OF VIRGINIA (1887) AND SUBSEQUENT Legislation FROM 93 VIRGINIA THROUGH 96 VIRGINIA, ALSO REFERENCES TO NOTES AND ARTICLES IN VOL. 4 OF VIRGINIA LAW REGISTER RELATIVE
