H, an elevated ridge, beneath which was the road from the gate near J, to the outbuilding, F, probably the granary (now the farm house), and the mill G, of which there remain a few courses of masonry, on the very margin of the Wear, fastened together by the iron clamps purchased in 1481.2.* And here may be seen, when the river is low, the foundation of the dam, consisting of pinnings of oak. These notices may suffice with respect to the church of Finchale and its offices. It must be added, that since the year 1830, the church itself, A, B, F, G, has been freed from the rubbish which had accumulated within its walls since the Dissolution, which, in the centre, where the tower and spire had fallen, was not less than ten feet in thickness; a large sycamore was cut away from the high altar; ashes, and elders, and thorns, were all removed from the nave and chancel; and such portions of the floor as remained were laid bare. A few glazed paving tiles were found near the shrine of Godric. One small stone was marked with a cross and
