And be it further ordained and enacted by the authority aforesaid, that no steeples, trees or other things now standing as beacons or marks for the sea, whereof to the owner or occupier of the place where the same doth grow or stand, before the first day of March next coming notice shall be given by the queen's majesty's letters under her signet, shall at any time hereafter be taken down, felled or otherwise cut down; upon pain that every person by whose procurement or consent such offence shall be committed, shall forfeit the sum of one hundred pounds, whereof the one moiety to the queen's majesty, and the other moiety to be to the master, wardens and assistants of the said Trinity House. And if the said person or persons so offending be not of the value of one hundred pounds, then the same person and persons to be deemed convict of outlawry ipso facto, to all constructions and purposes. 19 CHARLES 2. CAP. 3, SECS. 31-33.-An act for rebuilding the city of London. XXXI. It is hereby further enacted, that the parish churches to churches to be rebuilded within the said city of London, in lieu of those which were demolished by the late fire, shall not exceed the number of thirty-nine; which shall be set out and appointed by and with the advice and consent of the lord archbishop of Canterbury, and the bishop of London for the time being. Sites and materials of churches to how employ ed. XXXII. Provided also, and be it enacted by the authority aforesaid, that the sites and materials of such churches as by this bill are be sold, and not intended to be rebuilt, together with the church-yards belonging to such churches, shall be and are hereby vested in the lord mayor and aldermen of the city of London for the time being; to the end so much of the said ground as shall not upon the rebuilding of the said city, be laid into the streets, be sold and disposed of by the said lord mayor and aldermen, or the major part of them for the time being, with the consent of the archbishop of Canterbury, and bishop of London for the time being; and the money raised by such sale shall be by the said mayor and aldermen, or the major part of them, with the consent of the said archbishop and bishop, disposed of and employed for and towards the rebuilding of such parish churches as by this act are intended to be rebuilt, and for no other use or purpose whatsoever. It is hereby further enacted and declared, that the lord archbishop of Canterbury, the lord bishop of London and lord mayor of London for the time being, shall be and are hereby empowered by indenture under their hands and seals, to engage the profits The profits arising of the respective impositions by this act imposed, and thereby arising from the imposiappointed to be employed for and towards the rebuilding and erect- tions may be ing, or repairing of the cathedral and parish churches within the said engaged to city respectively, or any part or parts thereof, as a security for any sent stock of sum or sums of money by them to be borrowed for that purpose, to any person or persons that shall or will advance any sums of money upon that security: all which monies so to be borrowed shall be employed for and towards the rebuilding and erecting, or repairing of the said cathedral and parish churches respectively, according to the true intent and meaning of this act; and in like manner also are hereby further empowered, to assign such proportion or proportions of the monies, to be paid in course out of the said impositions, to the parishioners of any of the respective parish churches, or any other person or persons who shall and will secure the advancement of present monies for the rebuilding of their respective parish churches, and shall be willing to accept of such assignments for his or their satisfaction of the monies to be disbursed and laid out in the rebuilding thereof; and that the said mayor, commonalty and citizens of the city of London and their successors, shall be and are hereby enabled to engage the residue of the profits arising of the said imposition, either by virtue of this or the aforesaid act respectively, as a security for any sum or sums of money by them to be borrowed and taken up for that purpose, by indenture under their common seal, to any person or persons that shall or will upon that security advance any present sum or sums of money: all which sum or sums of money so to be borrowed, shall be employed for and towards the making of such satisfaction, and other the uses, intents and purposes whereunto the said respective impositions are by this and the aforesaid act appointed to be converted and employed, and not otherwise; and also in like manner shall and may assign any sum or sums of money to be paid in course out of the said imposition, to any person or persons whose grounds shall be taken as aforesaid, who are or shall be willing to accept thereof for his or their satisfaction. LXII. LXVII. Provided always, that where any part of the churches or church-yards of any of the said parish churches hereby appointed to be rebuilt and continued, have been thought fit by the mayor and court of aldermen of the said city, to be laid into any of the streets within the said city, for enlargement thereof; and by order of the said mayor and court of aldermen, shall have been before the five and twentieth day of March one thousand six hundred and seventy, staked and set out accordingly: it is hereby further enacted and declared, that the grounds so staked out shall be made use of for the enlarging of the said streets, according as the same were for that purpose staked and set out as aforesaid; this present act, or any thing therein contained, to the contrary notwithstanding. Coals delivered to Chelsea college, exempted. 8 & 9 WILLIAM 3, CAP. 14.—An act for the completing the building and adorning the cathedral church of Saint Paul, London, and for repairing the collegiate church of Saint Peter, Westminster.-Whereas 1 Jac. 2, c. 15. by an act made in the parliament begun at Westminster the nineteenth day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand six hundred eighty and five, and in the first year of the reign of the late king James the second, intituled, an act for rebuilding, finishing, and adorning of the cathedral church of Saint Pauls, London, it was enacted, that for all sorts of coals, which from and after the nine and twentieth day of September one thousand six hundred eighty and seven, and before the nine and twentieth day of September one thousand seven hundred, should be imported and brought into the port of the said city of London, or the river of Thames, within the liberty of the said city upon the same river, there should be paid by way of imposition thereupon, over and besides all other impositions and duties, according to the rates thereinafter mentioned (that is to say) for all sorts of coals and culm as are usually sold by the chaldron, for every chaldron thereof, containing thirty-six bushels Winchester measure, the sum of eighteen-pence; and for such sort of coals as are sold by the ton, for every ton thereof, containing twenty hundred EXP. Altered by 9 Anne, c. 22, s. 9. weight, the like sum of eighteen-pence; which said imposition of eighteen-pence for every chaldron or ton of coals the said act doth appoint how to be collected and paid, and in the first place to be applied and disposed to the rebuilding, finishing, and adorning the said cathedral of Saint Pauls, and for the completing parochial churches, as by the said act more at large appears: and whereas not only the monies hitherto received for the said duty, but several great sums of money advanced upon the credit of the said act (a considerable part whereof is now owing) and all other supplies have been carefully expended and laid out about the said work, whereby the same is far advanced, and yet by reason of the extraordinary expense of shipping in time of war, and dearness of materials, the money hitherto provided for the works intended by the said act hath proved defective; and unless some further provision be made for completing the said works, that which is already done will be greatly damaged, if not wholly lost; and in case the same shall be completed, it will be necessary that some other things be done, both for the convenience and ornament of the said cathedral church, &c. Duty laid on coals and culm from twenty-ninth September one thousand seven hundred to twenty-ninth September one thousand seven hundred and sixteen. For every chaldron one shilling. Every ton, one shilling, to be applied, one sixth part to the repairing Saint Peters Westminster.
