PREFACE.

THE Editor of the following Abstract met with so much instruction in reading the Archbishop of Cambray's writings, as to incline him to select certain parts of them, with a view to his own profit in some future time; and having proceeded further in it than he at first expected, concludes to publish them in a small volume for the benefit of others.

And as this may come into the hands of some who have not had opportunity of knowing much concerning this good man, the following short memoirs of his life, are added, written soon after his death, by one of his intimate acquaintance.

When he accepted the Archbishoprick of Cambray, he resigned the Abby of St. Vallery, which had been given to him by the King, without asking it for any of his friends; the King wondered at it, and pressed him to keep it; but he represented that the revenues of the bishoprick being more than sufficient, he thought himself in that case wherein the canons forbid pluralities of benefices. He relinquished, at the same time, the priory, which he had from his uncle. So rare a disinterestedness gained him great respect, but it also occasioned a certain grudge against him, in those persons whom his example condemned. This was about the year 1695.
