CHAP. LXXV.-An Act imposing taxes for the fiscal year ending June thirty, eighteen hundred and seventy-two.

Be it enacted by the Legislative Assembly of the District of Columbia, That, for the support of the government of the District of Columbia for the fiscal year ending June thirty, eighteen hundred and seventy-two, and for other purposes herein stated, there shall be levied on all taxable property in the city of Washington an aggregate tax of one dollar and seventy cents on each hundred dollars of the assessed value of said property; on like property in the city of Georgetown a tax of ninety-five cents; on the same in the Washington County of Washington, outside of the limits of said cities, a tax of eighty-five cents on each hundred dollars of the assessed value of said property.

SEC. 2. SEC. 3. And be it further enacted, That this act shall not apply to parsonages, churches, or the grounds on which church or parsonage may be erected; nor shall it apply to any burial grounds owned by churches and where the proceeds are used for church purposes.

SEC. 4. And be it further enacted, That on all taxes remaining unpaid after the first day of January, eighteen after January 1, hundred and seventy-two, a penalty of three per centum for each month after said date shall be added, until the same shall be paid or advertised for sale for taxes, and said penalty shall be added to the amount due in tax-sale list. SEC. 5. And be it further enacted, That the sum named in the first section of this act shall be divided as follows: act. On property in the city of Washington:

For District fund, seventy cents.

For lighting the city with gas, fifteen cents.

For Metropolitan police, twenty cents.

CHAP. LXXVII.—An Act making appropriations for defraying the expenses of the Board of Health.

CHAP. LXXIX.—An Act appropriating ten thousand dollars for sweeping certain avenues and streets.

Be it enacted by the Legislative Assembly of the District of Columbia, That the sum of ten thousand dollars, or as much thereof as may be necessary, be, and the same is hereby, appropriated out of the Washington fund, to be expended under the direction of the Board of Public Works, to sweep and cleanse Pennsylvania avenue from First to Fifteenth streets west, and Fifteenth street to New York avenue, and M street from Fifteenth to New Jersey avenue, for the period of one year.

SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That from the necessity arising to have the work done immediately, this act shall go into effect on and after its passage. Approved August 23, 1871.

CHAP. LXXXII.—An Act authorizing the construction of a water-main on Vermont avenue, between K and M streets north.

Be it enacted by the Legislative Assembly of the District of Water-main to be Columbia, That the Board of Public Works be, and they are hereby, authorized and requested to cause a watermain to be laid on Vermont avenue, between K and M streets north; the work to be done in accordance with existing laws; and to defray the expense thereof a sum sufficient be, and the same is hereby, appropriated out of the water fund, to be reimbursed as provided for by law. Asylum.
