Placed in the situation of watchman, I found this a difficult point, viz., how to labour, and how to retire. But I endeavoured to to do the one, without leaving the other undone; and I found, that as I progressed towards the centre, my mind retained a more tranquilized and less irritable state, than formerly, when active exertions were the sole business of my life.

It made my heart bleed to watch their struggles, and I knew not how to leave the gate for a moment, lest my services should be required.s
