Plantation Plaisance have been and are sub-divided into numerous lots, upon which respectively numerous houses and buildings have been erected, and the same now form a Village or Town, called Plaisance: And whereas by reason of the sub-division into lots of the said Plantation, each proprietor of each lot has not thought it incumbent upon him to aid and assist in keeping in repair the line of Public Road and Bridges passing through and over the lands of said Plantation, and the said line of Public Road and Bridges thereof have fallen into disrepair: And whereas it is expedient that the said line of Public Road and Bridges, and also the sea dam, and other dams and kokers necessary to the preservation of the said Public Road and Bridges, should be kept in repair by the proprietors of the said several lots into which the said Plantation has been subdivided, and that provision should be made for compelling the said several proprietors to keep in repair the said line of Public Road and Bridges, the sea dam, and other dams and kokers necessary to the preservation thereof:

1. Be it therefore enacted by His Excellency the Governor of Proprietors to British Guiana, with the advice and consent of the Court of Policy thereof, that the proprietor of any land, or land and buildings, of the Plantation formerly known as Plaisance, situate on the East Sea Coast of Demerara, and now styled and known as Plaisance Village, shall be liable to be and shall be assessed in manner and form hereinafter mentioned to contribute to the making up and keeping in repair the line of Public Road and Bridges running or passing through and over the lands of the said Plantation Plaisance, the sea dam, and other dams and kokers necessary for the preservation thereof.

2. And be it enacted, that any Justice of the Peace resident at Commissioners or near Plaisance, and nominated by the Governor of British Guiana, designated. together with the Commissioner or Commissioners of Roads and Bridges of the District in which Plaisance is situate, and four of the principal inhabitants of said Village, shall be Commissioners under and by virtue of this Ordinance, and for the purposes of this Ordi. nance, and shall be styled "Commissioners of the Public Road "and Bridges of Plaisance Village."

3. And be it enacted, that the said Justice of the Peace so nominated as aforesaid, and the said Commissioner or Commissioners of Roads and Bridges of the District aforesaid, shall in the month of

Gazette of the Colony, and by notice in writing affixed to the door try Commis of every Church or Chapel in Plaisance Village, summon and call together a meeting of the proprietors of lots of land, or land and buildings, in said Village, at some certain time and at some certain place in Plaisance Village aforesaid, such time to be not less than fourteen days after the publication of such advertisement and affixing of such notices, and such advertisement and notices shall specify that such meeting of proprietors is called for the purpose of appointing four fit and proper persons, being proprietors of any land, or land and buildings, in Plaisance Village, to be Commissioners jointly with the Justice of the Peace and the District Commissioner or Commissioners of Roads and Bridges as aforesaid for the purposes of this Ordinance.

4. And be it enacted, that every proprietor of any land, or land Mode of electand buildings, assessed for the purposes of this Ordinance in the said ing proprietary Village, being of full age and not subject to any legal disability, shall be entitled to vote in the election of such number of proprietors as aforesaid, to be joint Commissioners as aforesaid for the purposes of this Ordinance, and such votes shall be taken in such manner and form as the said Justice of the Peace and said District Commissioner or Commissioners of Roads and Bridges, or the majority of them, may deem most convenient and eligible; and after such votes shall have been taken, a roll fairly written out of such votes shall be made and kept by such Justice of the Peace as Chairman of such Commissioners, and such roll shall contain the names of every person who shall have given his vote at such meeting; and upon taking the votes and ascertaining in whose favour the greatest number of votes shall have been given, the said Justice of the Peace and said District Commissioner or Commissioners, or the majority of them, shall declare the four proprietors having the largest number of votes to be duly elected Commissioners for the purposes of this Ordinance, to act jointly with the said Justice of the Peace and said District Commissioner or Commissioners of Roads and Bridges, and to serve as Commissioners under this Ordinance for the term of one year from the date of such election.

5. And be it enacted, that on the death of any Commissioner Vacancy how being a proprietor of any land, or land and buildings, in Plaisance filled up.

Village as aforesaid, or on any such Commissioner ceasing to be a proprietor during the year for which he was elected, the vacancy shall be filled by another proprietor, on the nomination of the remaining joint Commissioners; and the Commissioners thus elected shall serve during the remainder of the year for which his predecessor had been elected.

6. And be it enacted, that the said Justice of the Peace or Chairman of such Commissioners shall, previously to entering on the Commissioner. duty of his office, take an oath in the following form, before the other Commissioners, and shall then administer such oath to each of the other Commissioners, and every such oath shall be entered in a book and signed by the Commissioners taking it :

7. 8. And be it enacted, that an assessment shall be made by the Commissioners in the month of June, or within one month thereafter, in each successive year.

9. And be it enacted, that no assessment shall be made by the Commissions aforesaid until after they shall have framed an estimate of the cost of making up or keeping in repair, as the case may be, of the said Public Road and Bridges, sea dam, and other dams and kokers necessary for the preservation thereof.

ford.14anno AN ORDINANCE TO REPEAL ORDINANCES No. 5, OF THE YEAR 1843, No. 10, OF THE YEAR 1844, AND No. 5, OF THE YEAR 1848; AND TO PROVIDE FOR THE REMUNERATION OF JURORS, WITNESSES, AND INTERPRETERS, FOR THEIR ATTENDANCE AT THE SESSIONS OF THE SUPREME COURT OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE OF BRITISH GUIANA; AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES.

Enacted 11th July, 1849, published the 15th August following, came into operation on publication.

WHEREAS it is expedient to Repeal certain Ordinances pro

viding for the Remuneration of Witnesses for their Attendance on Trials before the Supreme Courts of Criminal Justice of British Guiana, and for other purposes, and to make other provisions in lieu thereof; and whereas it is expedient to provide for the remuneration of such Witnesses, and of Jurors and Interpreters, for their attendance at the Sessions of the said Supreme Courts of Criminal Justice:

1. Be it therefore enacted by His Excellency the Governor of Ordinance No. British Guiana, with the advice and consent of the Court of Policy 5, anno 1843- thereof, that Ordinance No. 5, of the year 1843, intituled "An No. 10, anno 1844-and No. " Ordinance to Remunerate Witnesses for their Attendance on Trials б, anno 1848, repealed,
