The Rev. Dr. MAUNSELL having been waited on by Edward Parker, Esquire, the Town Clerk, with the above Refolutions, he was pleafed to make the following Reply.

I

SIR,

AM highly flatterea by the very honourable appro bation of the Mayor and Corporation of Limerick, the third commercial city in this kingdom, for my difcovery,

THE CULTURE OF POTATOES FROM THE SHOOTS,

which through unremitting zeal and attention these two years paft, I have reduced to as perfect a system of agriculture as any other branch in that fcience.

My

My liberal communication of it to the public, (as they are pleased to term it,) was entirely difinterested, actuated alone by the high gratification, of rendering as an individual of fociety, every fervice to the community in which I live, and to mankind in general.

The abundance and great favings this mode of culTure will produce to two millions of people in this kingdom, who make potatoes their principal food, will in time have the happieft effects, as it will always keep up an ample supply of provifions for the lower orders. of the people, and be the means of keeping them quiet; while the countryman and merchant will meet with no interruption, in carrying two great objects of the legislasure into execution, the IMPROVEMENT of AGRI CULTURE, and the EXPORTATION of GRÁIN.

You will pleafe to prefent the Mayor and Common Council with my most grateful thanks, for this very bonourable mark of their approbation.

W. Maunfell.

To EDWARD PARKER, Efq.
Town Clerk.

TO THE

DUBLIN SOCIETY,

ON THE CULTURE OF

Potatoes from the Shoots.

LIMERICK, IN FEBRUARY, 1793.

My Lords and Gentlemen,

As every improvement in Agriculture muft

be an acquifition to the kingdom, and as the Dublin Society have encouraged and rewarded experiments of every kind, when they have been of publick utility; I have this year attempted an experiment on the culture of. Potatoes, which has anfwered my warmest expectation, and under the patronage and encouragement of the Dublin Society, muft be a very great annual faving to the Poor of this Kingdom, provided the culture of them in the manner Ihave purfued becomes general.
