There would have been no occafion to have fent Dr. Br-ckl-fby to Dr. Add-ngt-n to talk upon the fubject of America, if fome men, in the warmth of their eulogiums upon a refiftance to the fovereignty of Great Britain, had conceived for a moment, that they might be facrificing at the fhrine of American apoftacy. But the fpirit of enthusiasm, which never breathes but to contaminate, was wafted across the Atlantic, and triumphs in the ruin it has pccafioned.

THE DUKE OF R-D reports, that Dr. Br-ckl-fby had attended Dr. Add-ngt-n; but that his mind was so agitated,

and

and his time fo entirely employed in explanations and disavowals with Sir James Wr-ght, upon the fubject of meffages between Lord Bute and the late Lord Chatham, he could not undertake any meffage to, or to have any communication with Lord Camden (illness excepted), until he had perfectly cleared up his own character to the world; and Dr. Br-ckl-fby much doubts, from the tenor of their converfation, whether Dr. Add-ngt-n will be ever prevailed upon to interfere in politics for the future.

Notwithstanding political is a key to general knowledge, the prejudice, refentment, envy, and jealoufy, which generally refult from the one, counteract the operations of that system of love and benevolence which we are taught to follow by the other. Hence arifes all the animofity which has kept perfeverance fo long alive in the breafts of men, who would otherwife have fhone with peculiar luftre in the high road eloquence of turnpike-meetings, or in the fober path of country magistracy.
