SECT. XI.

The Mystery of CHRIST, bis Names, Natures, and Offices.

MY Lord appears! awake my foul!

Admire his name the Wonderful, 9

cipalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against fpiritual wickedness in high places.

Rev. xvii. 27. For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the bealt, until the words of God shall be fulfilled.

2 Eph. ii. 3. Among whom alfo we all had our converfation in times past, in the lufts of our fleth, fulfilling the defires of the fleth, and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

3 James i. 13. Let no man fay, when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man. Acts i. 15, 16. And in those days Peter ftood up in the midit of the difciples, and faid, Men and brethren, this fcripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost, by the mouth of David, spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jefus. And it. 23. Jefus of Nazareth, being delivered by the determinate counfel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and flain. And iv. 27, 28. 4 Hofea v. 11. Ephraim is oppressed, and broken in judgment; because he willingly walked after the commandment. 2 Cor. viii. 11, 12. Now therefore perform the doing of it; that as there was a readiness to will, fo there may be a performance alfo out of that which you have. For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted, according to that a man hath, and not according to that

he hath not.

1 Pfalm cxlvii. 5. Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite. Luke ii. 52. And Jefus increased in wisdom and ftature, and in favour with God and man.

2 Gal. iv. 4. But when the fulness of the time was come, God fent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law.

3 la. ix. 6. For unto us a child is born-: and his name fhall be called→→→ The everlafting Father. Mat. i. 23 Behold, a virgin fhall be with child, and fhall bring forth a fon, and they fhall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted, is, God with us.

He faith unto them, How the doth David, in spirit, call him Lord, faying, The Lord faid unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right-hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool? If David then call him Lord, how is he his fon? &c.

6 Mat. xxi. 5. Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and fitting upon an afs, and a colt the fole of an afs. Ver. 8, 9. And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way. And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, faying, Hofanna to the son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord, Hosanna in the higheft. Ver. 12. And Jefus went into the temple of God, and caft out all them that fold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the money. changers, and the feats of them that fold doves. Col. ii. 15. And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a fhew of them openly, triumphing over them in it (viz. his cross). Rom. iv. 25. Jefus our Lord was delivered for our of fences, and was raifed again for our juftification. Eph. iv. 8. Wherefore he (viz. David) faith, When he afcended on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. Rom. i. 4. Jefus Chrift our Lord was declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the refurrection from the dead.

7 Eph. iv. 22. Put off concerning the former conversation, the old man, which is serrupt, according to the deceitful lufts.

1 Pfalm cx. 7. He fhall drink of the brook in the way: therefore fhall he lift up the head.

2 Rom. viii. 3. God fent his own Son, in the likeness of finful flesh, and for fin condemned fin in the flesh. John i. 14. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father) full of grace and truth. Luke i. 35. And the angel answered and faid unto Mary, The Holy Ghoft fhall come upon thee, and the power of the highest shall overshadow thee: therefore alfo that holy thing which shall be born of thee, thall be called the Son of God. Heb. ii. 16. For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the feed of Abraham. And vii. 26, 27. For fuch an High-prieft became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from finners, and made higher than the heavens: who needed not daily, as thofe high-priefts, to offer up facrifice, firft for his own fins, and then for the peoples; for this he did once, when he offered up himself.

3 Ifa. lii. 5, 6. All we like fheep have gone aftray: we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. 2 Cor. v. 21. God hath made Chrift to be fin for us, who knew no fin: that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. Mat. xx. 28. The Son of man came to give his life a ransom for many.

4 Rom. iii. 25. Whom God hath fet forth to be a propitiation, through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remiffion of fins that are past, through the forbearance of God. Acts xx. 28. Feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. 1 Pet. i. 18, 19. Forafmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as filver and gold, from your vain converfation, received by tradition from your fathers; but with the precious blood of Chrift, as of a Lamb without blemish and without fpot. 1 John iii. 16. Hereby perceive we the love of God, becaufe he laid down his life for us.

5 Rev. i. 4, 5. Grace be unto you, and peace from-Jefus Chrift, who is the faithful witnefs, and the firft-begotten of the dead, and the Prince of the kings of the earth.

6 Zech. vi. 12, 13. Behold, the Man whofe name is the BRANCH,-he shall build the temple of the Lord, and he fhall bear the glory. Heb. xii. 2. Jesus, for the joy that was fet before him, endured the crofs, defpifing the fhame, &c. 7 Palm xlv. 7. Thou loveft righteoufnefs, and hateft wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. 8 Mat. xxvii. 29. And when they had plaited a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, faying, Hail king of the Jews.

The morning-ftar, the rifing fun
With equal speed and fplendor run. I
How glorious is the church's Head,
The Son of God, the woman's feed! 2

The first, the laft, the fecond man! 4
With equal brightnefs in his face,
Shines divine juftice, divine grace: 5
The jaring glories kindly meet,
Stern vengeance, and compaffion sweet. 6
God is a Spirit; feems it odd
To fing aloud the blood of God? 7
Yea, hence my peace and joy refult,
And here my lafting hope is built. 8.

1 Rev. xxii. 16. I (Jesus) am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning-ftar. Mal. iv. 2. But unto you that fear my nome, fhall the Sun of righteousness arife with healing in his wings; and ye fhall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.

2 Col. i. 18. And Chrift is the head of the body, the church; who is the beginning, the first-born from the dead: that in all things he might have the pre-eminence. John iii. 16. God fo loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whofoever believeth in him, fhould not perith, but have everlasting life. Gen, iii. 15. And I (viz. the Lord God) will put enmity between thee and thee woman, and between thy feed and her feed: it fhall bruife thy head, and thou shalt bruife his heel.

3 Ifa liii. 8 He was taken from prifon and from judgment: and who fhall declare his generation? Prov. xxx. 4. Who hath afcended up into heaven, or defcended? who hath gathered the wind in his fifts? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his Son's name, if thou can't tell? I Cor. xv. 45.

4 Rev. i. 11. I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last. The laft Adam was made a quickening Spirit. Verfe 47. The fecond man is the Lord from heaven.

5 2 Cor. iv 6 For God, who commanded the light to fhine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God, in the face of Jefus Chrift. Rom iii 24,-26 Being justified freely by his grace, through the redemption that is in Jefus Chrift: whom God hath fet forth to be a propitiation, through faith in his blood, to declare his righteoufnefs for the remiffion of fins that are paft, through the forbearance of God; to declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be juft, and the juftifier of him which believeth in Jefus. Eph. i. 6, 7 To the praife of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the Beloved: in whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of fins, according to the riches of his grace.

6 Rom. v 20, 21 But where fin abounded, grace did much more abound: that as fin hath reigned unto death, even lo might grace reign through righteoufnefs unto eternal life, by Jefus Chrift our Lord. Pfalm lxxxv 10 Mercy and truth are met together righteoufnefs and peace have kiffed each other.

7 John iv 24 God is a fpirit, and they that worship him, muft worship him in fpirit and in truth. Acts xx 28 Feed the church of God, which he hath purchafed with his own blood.

8 Rom. v. 1. Therefore, being justified by faith, we have peace with God, through our Lord Jefus Chrift. Verse 10 For if when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son; much more being reconciled,

Love through his blood a vent has fought,
Yet divine love was never bought:
Mercy could never purchas'd be,
Yet ev'ry mercy purchas'd he. I
His triple ftation brought my peace,
The Altar, Prieft, and Sacrifice; 2
His triple office ev'ry thing,

My Priest, my Prophet is, and King. 3
"This King, who only man became,
Is both the Lion and the Lamb: 4
A King of kings, and kingdoms broad; 5
A fervant both to man and God. 6

we fhall be faved by his life. 1 Pet. iii. 15. Be ready always to give an an fwer to every man that afketh you a reafon of the hope that is in you, with meeknefs and fear. Verfe 18. For Chrift hath alfo once fuffered for fins, the juft for the unjuft (that he might bring us to God) being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit.

1 Rom. v. 9. Much more then being now juftified by his blood, we fhall be faved from wrath through him. Verfe 21. See figure 6 p. 207. John iii. 16. God fo loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whofoever believeth in him, fhould not perish, but have everlasting life. Rom. ix. 15. God faith to Mofes, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy; and I will have compaffion on whom I will have compaffion. Eph. i. 3. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jefus Christ, who hath bleffed us with all fpiritual bleffings in heavenly places in Chrift.

2 Heb. xiii. 10. We have an altar whereof they have no right to eat, which ferve the tabernacle. And ii. 17. Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren; that he might be a merciful and faithful Highprieft, in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the fins of the people. And ix. 26. But now once in the end of the world, hath Christ appeared, to put away fin by the facrifice of himself.

3 Acts vii. 37. This is that Moles which faid unto the children of Ifrael, A prophet fha 1 the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear. Ifa. xxxiii 22 The Lord is our judge, the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our king, he will save us.

41 Tim. iii. 16 And, without controverfy, great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh, &c. Rev. v. 5, 6 And one of the elders faith unto me (viz. John) Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loofe the feven feals thereof. And I beheld, and lo, in the midst of the throne, and of the four beafts, and in the midst of the elders stood a Lamb as it had been flain, having feven horns, and seven eyes, which are the feven fpirits of God, fent forth into all the earth, Verse 12. Worthy is the Lamb that was flain, to receive power, and riches. and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and bleffing.

5 Rev. xix 16 And he (viz. the Word of God) hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. Ifaiah xxxvii. 15, 16 And Hezekiah prayed unto the Lord, faying, O Lord of hosts, God of Ifrael, that dwelleft between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth, thou haft made heaven and earth. Rev. xi 15 And the feventh angel founded, and there were great voices in heaven, faying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Chrift; and he shall reign for ever and ever.
