Of works in the press of J. B. Lippincott & Co., the most important is Mr. Horace Howard Furness's "Variorum Edition of Shakespeare,' beginning with Romeo and Juliet. Besides the various readings of the numerous Shakespearian editors and their most valuable notes, this edition will present for the first time in English the critical commentaries of French and German scholars up to the present year.

Lenormant's Hand-book of Ancient History (Lippincott), Vol. I, comprises the history of the Israelites, Egyptians, Assyrians, and Babylonians; Vol. II, the history of the Medes and Persians, Phoenicians and Arabians, including the recently

discovered and highly important Moabite inscription of Mesha. It also contains a fac-simile of the Semitic Alphabet, lately brought to light, and a copious index. François Lenormant's admirable Hand-book of Ancient History."

Allen's Latin Reader (Ginn) consists of Selections from Phædrus, Cæsar, Curtius, Nepos, Sallust, Ovid, Virgil, Plautus, Terence, Cicero, Pliny, and Tacitus, with Notes and a General Vocabulary of Latin of more than 16,000 words, with references to Allen's, Harkness's, Madvig's, Bullions' and Andrews and Stoddard's Latin Grammars.

Chauvenet's Treatise on Elementary Geometry (Lippincott).-Prof. Chauvenet is already very favorably known to students of mathematics by his Plane and Spherical Trigonometry. The Geometry has, in style of discussion and arrangement of matter, the same qualities which make the Trigonometry such an excellent text-book. The demonstrations are concise, and yet comprehensive enough; avoiding frequent repetitions, and yet placing the point on which the proof turns clearly before the reader.-Harvard College Advocate.

THE ATLANTIC ALMANAC FOR 1871.

The ATLANTIC ALMANAC for 1871 has been prepared on the general plan adopted in the three numbers previously issued, that of combining with illustrations of a high order of merit literary articles of varied interest. Among the

LITERARY

CONTENTS

of the new issue are articles, never before reprinted, by CHARLES DICKENS, CHARLES LAMB, SIR WALTER SCOTT, and LEIGH HUNT, extracts from BAYARD TAYLOR'S Translation of Faust, and other entertaining biographical and miscel

laneous matter.

THE

ILLUSTRATIONS include beautiful designs for the Calendars, pictures suited to the several seasons, numerous attractive fancy sketches, and portraits of the Emperor Napoleon, the Prince Imperial, King William of Prussia, Count Bismarck, Queen Victoria, the Empress Eugenie, Dickens, Carlyle, Longfellow, Tennyson, Nilsson, and Patti. In the variety and excellence of its pictorial features, the ATLANTIC ALMANAC for 1871 far surpasses the preceding issues, and is beyond comparison the handsomest illustrated almanac ever published in America.
