She drew forth her bright shaft, and instantly turned over the leaves of my Bibe, and pointed to these words, "BEHOLD THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS WITHIN YOU." (a) And quickly turning over two leaves, placed her bar on this, "Notwithstanding, be ye sure of this, that the Kingdom of GOD is come nigh unto you.”(6)

O, with what amazing sweetness did those words fall upon my heart! Especially those "Be ye sure." "Thou lovely being," said I; "may I then really say that the Kingdom of GOD is set up in my heart?"

She immediately struck upon these words, "If CHRIST be in you the body is dead because of sin; but the spirit is life because of righteousness ;" and then turning over a few leaves, and pointing to this, I leaned forward and read, "Know ye not that your body is the temple of the HOLY GHOST, which is in you, which ye have of GOD, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price. Therefore, glorify GOD in your body and in your spirit, which are GOD's."() O, Thou kind Instructor and Revealer of heavenly truths, art Thou not a part of my new nature? I enquired.

She carried her polished steel rod to the edge of the seat, on which I read again, "Faith is the substance of things hoped for, and the evidence of things not seen."

"Truly then," said I, "sweet Faith, by thee, I am enabled to hope for glory, which is the substance, whilst I am now privileged to realize, by grace, the evidence of those things which are a prelude to glory. But, lovely being, let me ask thee, shall I ever leave these peaceful shores for those dreadful abodes which I see outside the coasts of this kingdom, and in which I have spent so many days of woe and misery ?"

She now turned the leaves once more, and pointed to John x. 9, "I am the Door, by me if any man enter, he shall go in and out, and find pasture.”

"Then," said I; "that narrow Strait of Life, adjoining the Crimson Fountain and the Red Sea of Atonement, is, I perceive, the door into this kingdom: is it not, thou heavenly guest?"

She smiled and nodded assent; and then pointing to the 132d Psalm, I read, "For the LORD hath chosen Zion; he hath de

sired it for His habitation. This is my Rest for ever; here will I dwell, for I have desired it."

I now burst forth with sorrowful feelings which sprung up in my heart, as in a moment. "O that I may never go out of this kingdom into those polluted hideous shores of the world!" I had scarcely uttered these words when the elegant being had vanished. I sat very pensive for many minutes; and my heart was ready to break with sadness and oppression; the shades of evening began to draw in apace, and I hastened down the mountain, lest I should be overtaken with the night; the sun must have set some time before I departed. However, I made all speed and reached my hospitable inn, the "Good Samaritan," just as supper was about to be served up.

WHETHER it arose from my pensive appearance, or from a desire to leave me to my own meditations, I could not tell; but Deborah and her sister spoke but little to me; and indeed, my mind was too full of the wonderful revelations which I had enjoyed, and of the mysteries which my soul had been led into, to allow me to be desirous of conversation, so that I was glad to retire after the meal, and enjoy my raptures and delightful feelings alone. I thought of Abraham Oldpath's answer to my question when first he met me, when, in my simplicity I said, " What part of the world am I in?" I sat down and read the Scriptures, and marked all those verses where mention is made of a new Kingdom;" "a

Rest;" .") 66 a new man ;" "CHRIST in you ;" a new spirit" &c. And, as my imagination was in full play, I sketched down the outline of what I saw, which I may, at some future period, grant the reader the privilege of looking over. I was roused from my meditations by the sound of the lovely music in the hall; the harps gave forth, methought, more melodious strains than ever and, with my soul full of gratitude and praise to the bounteous King of kings, I undressed and got to bed, and was soon fast asleep.

It must have been rather late when I awoke, for I heard the bell ring for prayers, and I hastened to dress; and was fortunately just in time to be present at the ceremony. As soon as Deborah observed me enter the hall, she beckoned for me to take a seat next to her; whilst I was rejoiced at seeing the sweet countenance of Abraham Oldpath on my other side. I felt my heart deeply sensible of the many mysteries which I had been permitted to take a glance of on the preceeding day, whilst on the Mount of Faith; and Mr. Oldpath opened the conversation by asking me how I had fared in my excursion.

"O, Revd. sir," I replied; "I have seen so much, and felt so deeply what I have seen, that I can scarcely put words together to express myself."

"That's not an uncommon thing, my daughter," said Abraham, “since you are but a babe in grace; and yet your LORD declares that out of the mouth of such babes GOD will perfect praise." "(a)

"But, Mr. Oldpath, how is it that CHRIST is formed in us, as it is written that He is our Head, and we are His mystical members?" I enquired; "for I cannot explain what I think I know and feel respecting this wonderful mystery."

"My daughter," answered he, " be assured that if you cannot express what you mean, it is because you yourself do not understand it; you must go to the LORD to teach you clearly what you do really think, feel, and mean. Now, if I was to ask you to discourse upon this scripture, 'Ye must be born again,' you could express yourself therein, could you not?"

"Surely," I said rather tremblingly, "I know, as you also informed me, that I am born into a new kingdom I never

sought, and never knew of, and the joys, sorrows, affections, and feelings which my heart has been the subject of since my happy sojourn in it, proves that I am altogether in a new kingdom; does it not, Revd. sir?"

66

Yes, it truly does," replied Mr. Oldpath; "and because you are in it, and know something of its beauty, you are enabled to understand it as well as mortals can understand such a mystery. But when we do not understand a subject, we talk and make a noise about it; hesitate, become confused, and cannot discourse upon it properly; but it is never so when GOD has taught us any truth. We should always distinguish, my daughter," continued he, "between the truths and Scriptures laid upon our minds by a minister, and those by GOD the HOLY GHOST. GOD suits His teaching to our capacities; the understanding, He gives. But man may force upon our minds a deep subject, which we are too young in experience to enter upon. Here is the difference. What GOD works in He also will work out; but it is not so with man. Now, with regard to our union to our blessed LORD, our Head; we His members are His mystical body. Great is the mystery of godliness.' It is, we know; but to explain very minutely and exactly how, is more than you, my child, or I can do."

"I quite comprehend your meaning, my dear sir; but is it not said that the soul, when washed in the Crimson Fountain, and thereby brought into this blessed kingdom, is created anew in CHRIST JESUS?"

"It is, my daughter," answered Abraham. "The secret things belong unto GOD; the things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children. Blessed is the man that feareth always. Let us rest in God's love; for He is love; and perfect love casteth out fear; and, at the same time, sit in the lowest dust, which is the only safe place for sinners. Any place short of God's love, is short of complete rest, since God is love, and we can go no higher. With respect to CHRIST being formed in us, you are not to suppose that young Christs are formed in us, and that the new creation is another Christ, or a Christ, as some babes in this kingdom have pictured to themselves. No, my child; the new creation is a real New Man, formed in us from above. This 'new man' is the habitation for the SPIRIT of CHRIST, by the

operation of GOD the HOLY GHOST. He dwells in us throughout our spiritual life; feeds the new man with milk at its new birth, then with new wine, strong meat, and then from strength to strength, till, in the measure of CHRIST's stature, according to GOD's eternal will, the new man is ripe for glory. He then leaves his cage, our flesh; breaks away; and, without an atom of change, that new man rises up from earth as it came down from above,' "born of God,' and enters heaven, waiting for the redemption of the body. It will then put on a body immortal, - and incorruptible, and glorious; whereas, now, that body is defiled, fleshly, earthly, sensual, devilish, vile, filthy, impure, sinful; to every good work reprobate. All that God puts into us of heavenly is put into our new man. GOD works in the new man; and the new man pulls away at the obstinate rebellious flesh, or old nature, in which dwells 'no good thing.' The new nature, influenced by the SPIRIT of the LORD, wants to be holy; it wars against the old nature, which wants to sin and to be unholy. Hence the battle, conflict, warfare. The new man never alters to sin; he sinneth not.' The old man never alters to holiness; he always sins. Hence the daily struggle and fight. So the apostle reasons in the 7th of Romans. The stature, power, strength, and unction of the new man depends on GOD."

"Then it appears to me, Revd. sir, that we might compare it thus: twin children are born; one grows up strong and powerful; another is small and delicate; one lives longer than the other; one has a ten times better appetite than the other. According to the appetite and powers of digestion, so the strength and stature."

"Certainly, it is a just similitude," replied Abraham; "for 'blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness.' The new man hungers and thirsts. Thus we read of babes; little children; young men; fathers in CHRIST: all sizes enter heaven. The whole stature and strength depend on the Eternal Gon. As in creation two trees differ, so in grace; two trees of the LORD's right hand planting differ, according to His pleasure."

"Then, dear sir," replied I, "when we read that if any man be in CHRIST JESUS, he is a new creature,' we are not to mistake CHRIST in us, as little gods. It is not that, but a new
