HISTORY, BIBLIOGRAPHY, &c.

A UNIVERSAL HISTORICAL DICTIONARY; or, Explanation of the Names of Persons and Places in the Departments of Biblical, Political, and Ecclesiastical History, Mythology, Heraldry, Biography, Bibliography, Geography, and Numismatics. By GEORGE CRABB, A.M. In 2 large vols. 4to. (No. XII. completing the work, will be published Dec. 1st.) The work is embellished and illustrated by forty plates, containing 800 Portraits of Illustrious Persons classed according to their Distinctions, Professions, and Pursuits; and by an immense number of Cuts, chiefly from Coins, Medals, and Statues.

TECHNOLOGY AND SCIENCE.

A UNIVERSAL TECHNOLOGICAL DICTIONARY; or, Familiar Explanation of the Terms in all Arts and Sciences. By the same Author. In 2 vols. 4to. with sixty plates and numerous cuts. Price 5l. 8s.

As books of reference, this and the Historical Dictionary will be found the most useful in the language. The object of the Technological Dictionary is not to supersede the use of an Encyclopedia, but to define briefly, and perspicuously, all the Terms used in the Arts and Sciences, elucidated, wherever the subject requires it, as in Botany, Heraldry, Mechanics, &c. by cuts or plates. A Synoptical view is also given of each science, under which its Terminology is classed and explained.

In like manner the Historical Dictionary is not intended to supply the place of Biographical and Geographical works, but to furnish, in a convenient form, a vast mass of information, which would in vain be sought for from such sources, although much required both by the historical student and the general reader.

HISTORY OF WINES.

A HISTORY of ANCIENT and MODERN WINES. Elegantly printed in 4to. with Embellishments from the Antique, price 21. 2s.

** A few Copies are printed, with the Vignettes on India paper, price 31. 3s. "Cet Ouvrage a obtenu beaucoup de succès, et il le meritait." Revue Encyclopedique.

JOANNA OF NAPLES.

THE HISTORICAL LIFE of JOANNA, QUEEN of NAPLES and COUNTESS of PROVENCE, with correlative Details of the Literature and Manners of Italy and Provence in the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Century. In 2 vols. 8vo. with Portrait, Vignettes, &c. Price 17. 5s.

"The subject of these volumes is a happy one, and has never yet been treated in our Literature with the attention which it deserves. The period of the revival of Letters in Europe is one of the most interesting epochs which the historian or biographer can select, and it is singular that it should have been reserved for writers of the present day to introduce the subject to the English reader.-These writers (De Sade, &c.) have furnished the substratum of the present volumes, which are an agreeable melange of History, Biography, and Literature."-New Monthly Mag.

BURKE AND HIS CONTEMPORARIES.

MEMOIR of the LIFE and CHARACTER of the RIGHT HON. EDMUND BURKE; with Specimens of his Poetry and Letters, and an Estimate of his Genius and Talents, compared with those of his great Contemporaries. By JAMES PRIOR. In one large volume, 8vo. price 15s. With Autographs, and a Portrait from the celebrated Painting (1775) by Reynolds.

"The characters and the parallels Mr. P. has occasionally drawn of Pitt and Fox, of Johnson and Sheridan, and of some other contemporaties of the hero of his volume, are executed in a very masterly way; and he exhibits altogether so much vigour of intellect, so much power and discrimination, and is so thoroughly acquainted with his subject, that we cannot but congratulate him upon the ability he has displayed, and recommend his book to our readers, as one of the most agreeable and instructive productions of the present day."-Lit. Gazette.

CHRONOLOGY AND HISTORY.

COMPENDIOUS VIEW OF UNIVERSAL

HISTORY

and LITERATURE, in a Series of Tables, from the German of PROFESSOR BREDOW, with an appended Table of Painters, from the French Notes of Sir MATTHEW VAN BREE. By Major JAMES BELL. Second Edition, greatly enlarged and improved, royal folio, price 17. 10s. strongly and handsomely half-bound.

Among the Additions to the present publication may be noticed the separate Sketches of the History of Ireland and of Scotiand, as also of the Roman Rule and of the divided Saxon Sway in Britain.

**The Tables of History and Literature (exclusive of the comprehensive View of the various Schools of Painting), have already gone through five large Editions in the German, and will be found well worth the attention of all public Literary Associations, and of every well-informed private family. They offer to Authors the most rapid Reference to historical Dates, from the earliest period to the present time, that is to be found in the English Language; and to the Instructors of Youth, as well as to Students, in the Universities, and in superior Establishments for Education, they will be found to be of eminent utility.
