MY LORD ARCHBISHOP, Your high position, true catholic spirit, and the interest I feel in the work I have had in your former diocese, give me confidence in addressing your Grace. The endeavour to unite Christendom must be without result so long as the one truth, which stands at the threshold of the Covenant and in the forefront of the Lord's teaching, is ignored, or imperfectly and indistinctly taught. It is the one Cross-Christ crucified, "lifted up" in the heart, demonstrated in the life. This axe lies at the root of every tree, and must be made effective before there can be the true unity in the Spirit. It was recently, at a Church Congress in Liverpool, publicly averred, that "the age was sick with doubt, and craving for assurance." This we hear on all sides, and in all parts, even in our wanderings from home, where men merge all distinctions and communicate freely. But, why is it? Why should the age be one A 2 of doubt? Why should it crave for assurance and not have it? Why is this reproach resting so heavily upon us? To many poor assembled night after night in different parts of the parish, and to some of the largest congregations in one of the largest churches in your former diocese, I have taught the fundamental truths of the covenant, and enforced their being received and held in their proper order. And now I look forward with hope to a more extensive sphere, as I give to my fellow man an interpretation of the Scriptures, following the mind of the writer without losing one link in the chain of his ideas; giving therein not only a guarantee for a correct interpretation, but also an argument incontrovertible for the internal evidence of the inspiration of the Word of God.
