THE WORD-BOOK

OF THE

Y ATTENDON HYMNAL

DAY

No. I*

fr. L.

AY of wrath! O day of mourning! See fulfill'd the prophets' warning! Heav'n and earth in ashes burning!

2

Oh, what fear man's bosom rendeth When from heav'n the Judge descendeth, On whose sentence all dependeth!

3

What shall I, frail man, be pleading,

Who for me be interceding,

When the just are mercy needing?

*For At the cross,' see No. 44.

B

452457

Think, good Jesu, my salvation
Caused thy wondrous incarnation;
Leave me not to reprobation.

5

Faint and weary Thou hast sought me, On the cross of suffering bought me; Shall such grace be vainly brought me?

6

Guilty, now I pour my moaning,
All my shame with anguish owning;
Spare, O God, thy suppliant groaning.

7

With thy favour'd sheep O place me,
Nor among the goats abase me,
But to thy right hand upraise me.

8

Low I kneel, with heart-submission,
See, like ashes, my contrition;
Help me in my last condition.

9

Ah! that day of tears and mourning! From the dust of earth returning

Man for judgment must prepare him.

Lord, all pitying, Jesu blest,
Grant them thine eternal rest:
Grant them thine eternal rest

[blocks in formation]

MY God, I love Thee; not because
I hope for heaven thereby,

Nor yet because who love Thee not
Are lost eternally.

Thou, O my Jesus, Thou didst me

Upon the cross embrace;

For me didst bear the nails, and spear,

And manifold disgrace,

2

And griefs and torments numberless,

And sweat of agony;

Yea, death itself; and all for me

Who was thine enemy.
