present edition is that given in the tenth volume of the collected edition of Sir Walter Scott's Poetical Works published under the editorship of Lockhart in 1833. The notes relating to historical and antiquarian matters have been chiefly extracted from Scott's notes on the poem. Etymologies are relegated to the Glossary. The plan of the battle of Bannockburn is drawn to illustrate Scott's account of the battle. Somewhat different plans will be found in Sir Herbert Maxwell's Robert the Bruce and in Mr Oman's Art of War in the Middle Ages, which adopts the view combated by Scott that Bruce's front faced south.
