CHA P. I.

I.

A lady arrives at the court of Gloriana to defire the affftance of fome Knight for the relief of her royal parents, who are but up in a Brazen Cafile, by a Dragon-the Knight of the Red Cross fets out with her to atckieve the adventure-as they journey on, they are bewildered in the Wood of Error, whom the Knight at length flays, and they recover their road--they are afterwards accosted by Archimago, a Sorcerer, who feduces them to bis bermitage, where, by his magic arts, be deceives, and feparates them.

The Red Cross Knight is Jeparated, by the guileful arts of Archimago, from fair Una-be meets with a Saracen, whom he kills, and takes from him his mistress Dueffa, who accompanies him, in the room of Una, under the Denomination of Fidella.-The ftory of Fradubio, metamorphofed, by the treachery of Dueffa, into a Tree.

CHA P. III.

The forfaken Una, seeking, in vain, her wandering Knight, meets a lion, which couches at her feet, and laying afide his favage fierceness, becomes her protector.-She paffes a night in the dwelling of Superftition, where her new attendant tears in pieces a robber.-Archimago, having affumed the Shape and habit of the Red Cross Knight, impofes on the unfufpicious Una, but, meeting with a Saracen, is by bim

and detected.-Una being taken prisoner, and led away by the Pagan, her faithful lion, in attempting to rescue her, is flain.

CHA P. IV.

The falfe Dueffa feduces the Red Cross Knight to the house of Pride, where he meets with the Saracen, Sans-Joy, who endeavours to recover his brother's fhield, and to revenge his death; but, agreeable to the commands of the Queen, they prepare to decide their quarrel by a regular combat.

CHAP. V.

The Red Cross Knight vanquishes the Pagan; but the falfe Duessa saves him from death, and, by the affiftance of Tenebria, conveys bim to Efculapius, who undertakes his cure.
